  1. 1. AVHRR NDVI for monitoring and mapping of vegetation and drought in East African environments

    Author : Lars Eklundh; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geologi; fysisk geografi; physical geography; Geology; phenology; seasonality; Fourier series; geostatistics; signal-to-noise ratio;

    Abstract : In this thesis, an assessment is made of the performance of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from coarse resolution data from the NOAA AVHRR sensor, with particular reference to mapping and monitoring of drought and vegetation in East African vegetation and climatic conditions. Methods for analysing time series of satellite data are investigated. READ MORE

  2. 2. Development of Decision Support Tools for Urban Water Supply Management in Uganda

    Author : Frank Kizito; Roger Thunvik; Patrick Ogao; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Decision support systems; Participatory decision-making; Geovisualization; Non-revenue water; Geostatistics; Action research; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : In this study, five real-life problem situations were used to explore the challenges of developing and implementing decision support tools for management of an urban water utility in Uganda. The study sought to explore how the degree of adoption of formal decision support tools in practice, generally perceived to be low, could be improved. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterization of Hydrogeological Media Using Electromagnetic Geophysics

    Author : Niklas Linde; Laust B. Pedersen; Max A. Meju; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; Hydrogeophysics; radio magnetotellurics; ground penetrating radar; electrical resistance tomography; inversion; regularization; geostatistics; electrical anisotropy; fractured rock; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : Radio magnetotellurics (RMT), crosshole ground penetrating radar (GPR), and crosshole electrical resistance tomography (ERT) were applied in a range of hydrogeological applications where geophysical data could improve hydrogeological characterization. A profile of RMT data collected over highly resistive granite was used to map subhorizontal fracture zones below 300m depth, as well as a steeply dipping fracture zone, which was also observed on a coinciding seismic reflection profile. 4. 4. Mapping Primary Production for the West African Sahel with Satellite Data

    Author : Jonathan Seaquist; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography; Sahel; CENTURY; Monte Carlo; GPP; transpiration; LUE; CLAVR; PAR; compositing; MVC; geostatistics; noise; NDVI; NOAA AVHRR; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : A light Use Efficiency (LUE) model is developed that allows the mapping of total growing season Gross Primary Production (GPP) for the West African Sahel, using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) together with other data. Image quality may be poor in monthly NDVI maximum value composites as shown by an improved geostatistical noise estimation technique. READ MORE

  5. 5. Characterisation and Modeling of Discontinuous Rock Mass: Geostatistical Interpretation of Seismic Response to Fracture Occurrence, Discrete Fracture Network Modeling and Stability Predictions for Underground Excavations

    Author : Peter Starzec; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; keyblock predictions; induced seismicity; stochastic fracture network; geostatistics;

    Abstract : Geometric and mechanical characterisation of rock discontinuities is an essential constituent in deriving a reliable assessment of overall properties of crystalline rock mass. The knowledge about the occurrence, size, geometry pattern and intensity of joints/fractures is necessary to predict the performance of fractured rock as a fractured reservoir, or an underground transport and storage facility.
