  3. 3. A Gill Filament EROD Assay : Development and Application in Environmental Monitoring

    Author : Maria Jönsson; Ingvar Brandt; Björn Brunström; Kristian Ingebrigtsen; Håkan Olsén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; aquatic; benzo[a]pyrene; biomarker; CYP1A; environmental monitoring; EROD; fish; gill; indigo; PCB; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : A gill filament-based assay for the cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A)-catalysed activity ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) was developed in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and applied to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), saithe (Pollachius virens), and spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor). Exposure to waterborne β-naphthoflavone (βNF; 10-6 M) induced branchial EROD activity in all species but the spotted wolffish. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterization of xenobiotic metabolism in the feral teleost northern pike (Esox lucius)

    Author : Lennart Balk; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : A basic characterization of xenobiotic metabolism in the feral teleost Northern pike has been performed. The different aspects of concern have been:a) investigation of the uptake and distribution to different body compartments of the carcinogen and environmental pollutant benzo(a)pyrene using whole-body autoradiography and scintillation counting. 5. 5. Insights into Marine Fish Physiology in a Changing World

    Author : Karine Bresolin de Souza; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ocean acidification; carbon dioxide; temperature; global warming; Hippoglossus hippoglossus; Gasterosteus aculeatus; immune system; energy metabolism enzymes; oxidative stress; proteomics; behaviour;

    Abstract : Ocean acidification and global warming are largely caused by increased levels of atmospheric CO2, and marine fish are exposed to both these stressors simultaneously. Although the effects of temperature on fish have been investigated over the last century, the effects of moderate CO2 exposure and the combination of both stressors are not well-understood, especially long-term effects.
