  1. 16. Viscoelastic properties and plasticization potential of native, residual, and technical lignin

    Author : Åke Henrik-Klemens; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; lignocellulose; dynamic mechanical analysis; glass transition temperature; thermoplastic properties;

    Abstract : Lignin in biomass, pulp, and isolated during pulping all have great potential as renewable and inexpensive thermoplastic components and materials, but widespread utilization is hindered by high glass transition temperatures (Tg), brittleness, and poor flow properties. The aim of this thesis is to elucidate what molecular structures govern lignin thermoplasticity and how these can be efficiently manipulated. READ MORE

  2. 17. Edible and Biodegradable Whey Protein Films as Barriers in Foods and Food Packaging

    Author : Martin Anker; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; water vapor permeability; critical gel concentration; BETA-lactoglobulin; whey protein; mechanical properties; moisture content; microstructure; glass transition temperature; oxygen permeability;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the characterization of whey protein films. The films were cast from heated aqueous solutions and dried in a climate room at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity for 16 h. The microstructure of the films was found to be dependent on the protein concentration, the plasticizers, and the pH. READ MORE

  3. 18. Dynamics of Biomembranes and Rheological Properties of Living Cells

    Author : Peter Berntsen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cell mechanics; lipid dynamics; cell rheology; biomembranes; water dynamics; relaxations; phospholipids; glass transition;

    Abstract : An ingenious assembly of biomolecules and water constitute what we call biological tissue. The presence of water in this assembly is fundamental for the physiological processes and can make the difference between life and death. READ MORE

  4. 19. Material Properties of Starch and Cereal Protein Films and Foams

    Author : Thomas Gillgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; foam; avenin; oxygen permeability; amylopectin; water vapour permeability; plasticization; mechanical properties; zein; film; glass transition temperature; kafirin; prolamin; cereal protein; amylose; starch;

    Abstract : Materials that are renewable and biodegradable are demanded for environmental reasons. Biopolymeric materials, such as materials from starch and cereal proteins, are both renewable and biodegradable. However, starch and cereal protein materials are generally rather brittle and therefore need to be plasticized to become more flexible. READ MORE
