11. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms
Abstract : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). READ MORE

12. Immunoglobulins, immunoglobulin subclass-distributions and serologic markers in some renal and systemic disorders
Abstract : In this study we evaluated pathogenetic factors and possible mediators of renal and systemic disorders where immunologic mechanisms might be of importance. An abberant immunoglobulin and IgG-subclass distribution was detected in 103 patients with primary and secondary glomerulonephritis as well as in 38 patients with the systemic disease primary Sjögren 's syndrome or purpura hypergammaglobulinemica (elevated IgG1 and low IgG2 ). 13. Studies on anti-dsDNA Antibodies and other potential biomarkers in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Abstract : Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by chronic inflammation involving many organ systems. The etiology is unknown and the pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Impairments of the immune system and of the mechanisms regulating cell death are commonly seen in SLE patients. READ MORE

14. Complement in Autoimmunity - the importance of clearing waste
Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease where improperly cleared apoptotic cells and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) induce an autoimmune response. Complement is crucial to prevent SLE by tailoring immune responses and opsonizing dead cells but may also induce inflammation and tissue damage once the disease is initiated. READ MORE

15. Severe Streptococcus pyogenes disease in Europe; epidemiology and clinical manifestations
Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes, gives rise from mild skin infections and pharyngitis, to life threatening infections like bacteraemia, cellulitis, puerperal sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis (NF), and streptococcal toxic-like shock syndrome (STSS), or nonsuppurative sequelae, rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. In 2002, the first multinational network for invasive GAS disease surveillance was initiated by the EU-funded Strep-EURO project. READ MORE
