1. Quantitation of gluconeogenesis in humans
Abstract : Several methods have been introduced for estimating gluconeogenesis, but none provides a direct measurement without assumptions that condition the accuracy of the estimate. The aim of this work has been to develop a new method for quantitative studies of gluconeogenesis, applicable in humans. READ MORE

2. Studies on factors modulating glucose homeostasis in healthy and diabetic rats
Abstract : Glucose is the most common substrate for energy metabolism. Despite the varying demands for glucose, the body needs to regulate its internal environment and maintain a constant and stable condition. Glucose homeostasis requires harmonized interaction between several tissues, achieving equilibrium between glucose output and uptake. READ MORE

3. A phenotypic study of a unique respiratory strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and its application in protein production
Abstract : During aerobic growth at high glucose concentrations, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae prefers to catabolise glucose through fermentation rather than through respiration. Previously fully respiratory growth could only be achieved when a low external glucose concentration was maintained, in fed-batch and continuous cultures, but since the development of the respiratory strain, TM6*, in our laboratory this can now be achieved even at high external glucose concentration. 4. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds
Abstract : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics. 5. Metabolites in fish and humans as a response to different food ingredients : a metabolomics approach
Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to evaluate metabolomics changes in humans and fish as a response to food/feed consumption. To alleviate the environmental impact of animal production and maximize the use of resources, the valorization of meat by-products might be an attractive alternative. READ MORE
