  1. 1. Jejunal control of glucose homeostasis in the human body

    Author : Erik Elebring; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glucose homeostasis; ketogenesis; jejunum;

    Abstract : Background: The prevalence of obesity and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have risen dramatically over the last decades, and are major threats to the human health. Obesity, and also T2DM, is treated with lifestyle modifications, medications or by bariatric surgery, with varying success. READ MORE

  2. 2. Immunopathology of the Pancreas in Type 1 Diabetes

    Author : Anna Wiberg; Olle Korsgren; Oskar Skog; Åke Lernmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; glucagon; T cells; autoantibodies; glucose transporters; islets of Langerhans; pancreas; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results from a loss of functional insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. The etiology of T1D is poorly understood, but the detection of infiltrating inflammatory cells in the pancreas and circulating autoantibodies has led to the common notion that an autoimmune process plays a central role in the pathogenesis of the disease. 3. 3. Observations on morphology and function of cutaneous and subcutaneous sensory mechanoreceptors : an experimental study in mammals

    Author : Birgit Stark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : mechanoreceptors; somatosensory organisation; blood-nerve barrier; Glucose transporter-1; nerve regeneration; TGF-ß family; neurotrophin receptors;

    Abstract : Tactile sensory discrimination is dependent upon an intact system of peripheral mechanoreceptors, their nerve fibre afferents with cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglion and the dorsal column-medial lemniscal system which relays tactile information from the skin to the cortex. Injury to any part of the afferent pathways leads to compromised mechanoreceptive perception. READ MORE

  4. 4. Regulators of glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle and serum : implications for obesity and type 2 diabetes

    Author : Fredirick Mashili; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a growing worldwide problem of public health importance. Insulin resistance is commonly associated with obesity and a key factor mediating the progression to T2DM. READ MORE

    Abstract : Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α in Renal Cell Carcinoma Departments of Surgical and Perioperative Sciences, Urology and Andrology; Radiation Sciences, Oncology; Medical Biosciences, Pathology; and Medical Biosciences, Clinical Chemistry, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 2-3% of all human cancers. A distinguished feature of RCC is vascularisation and among the three dominating RCC types conventional RCC (cRCC) generally is more vascularised than papillary RCC (pRCC) and chromophobe RCC (chRCC).
