11. Plant UDP-glucose Pyrophosphorylase : Function and Regulation
Abstract : UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (UGPase) is an important enzyme of carbohydrate metabolism in all living organisms. The main aim of this thesis was to investigate the function and regulation of plant UGP genes as well as the UGPase proteins. READ MORE

12. Fat cell insulin resistance : an experimental study focusing on molecular mechanisms in type 2 diabetes
Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to further increase our understanding of mechanisms contributing to and maintaining cellular insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes (T2D). For this reason, the effects of high glucose and insulin levels on glucose transport capacity and insulin signaling, with emphasis on insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) were assessed in fat cells. 13. Oscillatory Ca2+ signaling in glucose-stimulated murine pancreatic β-cells : Modulation by amino acids, glucagon, caffeine and ryanodine
Abstract : Oscillations in cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) is the key signal in glucose-stimulated β-cells governing pulsatile insulin release. The glucose response of mouse β-cells is often manifested as slow oscillations and rapid transients of [Ca2+] i. READ MORE

14. Creating Ultrafast Biosensors for Neuroscience
Abstract : Neuronal communication is the basis for all our brain function and relies on regulated exocytosis, a cell function that involves release of quantal amounts of neurotransmitters into the gap space between interconnected neurons to serve as chemical signals. To study exocytosis, which is a fast process that occurs on the timescale of sub-milliseconds to milliseconds, a toolbox of analytical methods has been developed where the electrochemical based techniques offer quantitative and sufficient high temporal recording speed.
