  1. 1. FROM SERUM TO TISSUE: GALECTIN-BINDING GLYCOFORMS OF SERUM GLYCOPROTEINS AS FUNCTIONAL BIOMARKERS

    Author : Michael Carlsson; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Galectin; glycoproteins; intracellular sorting; biomarkers;

    Abstract : Galectins are small soluble proteins defined by a conserved sequence motif that forms a defining β-galactoside binding site shared among galectins; adjacent binding sites give each galectin a unique fine specificity for a specific subset of galactose containing glycans. A wealth of data now suggests important roles of galectins in both cancer and inflammation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Interaction of herpes simplex virus with cell surface glycosaminoglycans as a target for antiviral intervention

    Author : Kicki Bergefall; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HSV; glycoproteins; glycosaminoglycans; virus receptor; antiviral drugs;

    Abstract : Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in humans are predominantly manifested as oral cold sores or genital ulcers. As HSV infects cells by interaction with cell surface heparan sulfate (HS) and/or chondroitin sulfate (CS), the aim of the research work presented in this thesis was to explore the possibility of antiviral intervention with compounds that mimic HS or CS. 3. 3. Bacteria-agglutinating glycoproteins in human saliva : an in vitro study with special reference to Streptococcus mutans

    Author : Jan Rundegren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : agglutinin; glycoprotein; saliva; streptococcus mutans;

    Abstract : The activity and specificity of salivary glycoproteins (agglutinins) aggregating various human indigenous microorganisms were studied in vitro. The agglutinin reacting with a serotype c strain of Streptococcus mutans was isolated and chemically characterized.The results can be summarized as follows:1. READ MORE

  5. 5. The role of glycoproteins in glomerular pathophysiology

    Author : Alina Khramova; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Proteoglycans; Extracellular matrix; IgA nephropathy; Diabetic kidney disease;

    Abstract : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide and has a prevalence of around 10%. With time patients are at risk of losing their renal function and will need dialysis or transplantation for survival. There are no specific treatments available and mechanisms behind the onset and progression of CKD are still not fully investigated. READ MORE
