1. DESIREE: Instrumentation Developments and Hot Metal Cluster Decays
Abstract : This thesis presents instrumentation developments and measurements performed at the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. DESIREE operates at cryogenic temperatures ~13 K, with very low background pressures of ~10-14mbar, allowing the observation of stored ions to long times of tens of seconds and longer. READ MORE

2. Density Functional Theory Studies of Small Supported Gold Clusters and Related Questions : What a Difference an Atom Makes
Abstract : During the last decades the specific manipulation of matter on the (sub-) nanometer scale, also known as nanoscience, became possible by technologies such as the scanning tunneling microscope. Nanocatalysts, i.e. catalytic active structures of up to a few nanometers in size, belong to this rather new class of materials. READ MORE

3. Molecules and Clusters on Oxide Surfaces
Abstract : In this thesis X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory have been used to study the fundamental interactions between model oxidesurfaces and either organic, mixed organic/inorganic, or purely inorganic adsorbate layers. As model oxidesurfaces have served the rutile TiO2(110) surface and an in-situ grown iron oxide film supported by a Pt(111)surface. READ MORE

4. Electrical Transport in Nanoparticle Thin Films of Gold and Indium Tin Oxide
Abstract : Electrical transport properties of nanoparticle gold films made by the gas evaporation method were analysed using resistivity measurements. Low temperature electrical transport measurements showed a cross-over from a temperature range dominated by inelastic scattering to a temperature range dominated by elastic scattering, presumably by grain boundaries. 5. A vibrational spectroscopy study of the growth of silicate-1 films on noble metal surfaces
Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to acquire a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the preparation of Silicalite-1 films in general and on gold surfaces in particular. Molecular sieve films on gold surfaces were prepared using the seed film method. READ MORE
