1. Modelling Evolution : From non-life, to life, to a variety of life
Abstract : Life is able to replicate itself, e.g., a microorganism is able to divide into two identical ones, and a single plant is able to forest a whole island. READ MORE

2. Frustrated magnetism in icosahedral structures : The influence of order-disorder in quasicrystals and approximant crystals
Abstract : This work will begin with an introduction to quasicrystals (QCs) and their structure, defining the unit cell-equivalent for icosahedral quasiperiodicity: a 3D tiling based on the golden ratio and aperiodic in all three dimensions. We briefly present the cut-and-project method used to generate QCs from a higher dimension hypercrystal, and how to build the 3D Penrose tilings, composed of the two golden rhombohedra. READ MORE

3. Fiber-Optic Systems with Coherent Detection and Four-Dimensional Modulation
Abstract : To increase the data rates of fiber-optic communication systems, modulation formats withhigher spectral efficiency and/or higher power efficiency than binary formats are of greatinterest. These formats require coherent detection and this thesis has been dedicated toinvestigating both novel modulation formats and two different types of coherent systems. READ MORE

4. Sequences and games generalizing the combinatorial game of Wythoff Nim
Abstract : One single Queen is placed on an arbitrary starting position of a (large) Chess board. Two players alternate in moving the Queen as in a game of Chess but with the restriction that the $L^1$ distance to the lower left corner, position $(0,0)$, must decrease. The player who moves there wins. Let $\phi =\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, the golden ratio. READ MORE

5. Impartial Games and Recursive Functions
Abstract : Interest in 2-player impartial games often concerns the famous theory of Sprague-Grundy. In this thesis we study other aspects, bridging some gaps between combinatorial number theory, computer science and combinatorial games. READ MORE
