  1. 1. Modelling Evolution : From non-life, to life, to a variety of life

    Author : Yu Liu; David J. T. Sumpter; Peter Dittrich; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical biology; Biocomplexity; Artificial chemistry; Ecosystem evolution; Origin of life; Self-replication; Prebiotic evolution; Collectively-catalytic; Golden ratio; Tillämpad matematik och statistik; Applied Mathematics and Statistics;

    Abstract : Life is able to replicate itself, e.g., a microorganism is able to divide into two identical ones, and a single plant is able to forest a whole island. READ MORE

  2. 2. Frustrated magnetism in icosahedral structures : The influence of order-disorder in quasicrystals and approximant crystals

    Author : Fernand Denoel; Roland Mathieu; Marc de Boissieu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; quasicrystals; approximant crystals; spin glasses; SQUID magnetometry; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : This work will begin with an introduction to quasicrystals (QCs) and their structure, defining the unit cell-equivalent for icosahedral quasiperiodicity: a 3D tiling based on the golden ratio and aperiodic in all three dimensions. We briefly present the cut-and-project method used to generate QCs from a higher dimension hypercrystal, and how to build the 3D Penrose tilings, composed of the two golden rhombohedra. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fiber-Optic Systems with Coherent Detection and Four-Dimensional Modulation

    Author : Martin E Sjödin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; intradyne; polarization-switched QPSK; quadrature phase-shift keying QPSK ; coherent detection; self-homodyne; wavelength-division multiplexing; 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation; self-phase modulation; 128-SP-QAM; polarization multiplexing; pilot tone;

    Abstract : To increase the data rates of fiber-optic communication systems, modulation formats withhigher spectral efficiency and/or higher power efficiency than binary formats are of greatinterest. These formats require coherent detection and this thesis has been dedicated toinvestigating both novel modulation formats and two different types of coherent systems. READ MORE

  4. 4. Sequences and games generalizing the combinatorial game of Wythoff Nim

    Author : Urban Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Blocking manoeuvre; Beatty sequence; Combinatorial game; Complementary sequences; Impartial game; Interspersion array; Muller twist; Nim; Permutation of the natural numbers; Stolarsky array; Wythoff Nim; Beatty sequence;

    Abstract : One single Queen is placed on an arbitrary starting position of a (large) Chess board. Two players alternate in moving the Queen as in a game of Chess but with the restriction that the $L^1$ distance to the lower left corner, position $(0,0)$, must decrease. The player who moves there wins. Let $\phi =\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, the golden ratio. READ MORE

  5. 5. Impartial Games and Recursive Functions

    Author : Urban Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Algorithmically undecidable; Beatty sequences; Blocking maneuver; Cellular automaton; Comply maneuver; Complementary sequences; Dictionary process; Dual game; Game complexity; Game convergence; Game reflexivity; Heap game; Impartial game; Invariant subtraction game; Move-size dynamic; Nim; P-equivalence; Rule 110; Splitting sequences; *-operator; Subtraction game; Take-away game; Turing complete; Wythoff Nim; Turing complete;

    Abstract : Interest in 2-player impartial games often concerns the famous theory of Sprague-Grundy. In this thesis we study other aspects, bridging some gaps between combinatorial number theory, computer science and combinatorial games. READ MORE
