  1. 1. Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Herbivory in the Perennial Herb Lythrum salicaria

    Author : Lina Lehndal; Jon Ågren; Peter Hambäck; Marc Johnson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Disturbance gradient; Female reproductive success; Galerucella calmariensis; Galerucella pusilla; Herbivore removal; Latitudinal gradient; Local adaptation; Nanophyes marmoratus; Plant-herbivore interactions; Plant size; Resistance to herbivory; Tolerance to damage; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined field, common-garden and greenhouse experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions in the perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. More specifically I examined (1) whether resistance and tolerance to damage from herbivores vary with latitude and are positively related to the intensity of herbivory in natural populations, (2) whether effects of herbivory on plant fitness vary with latitude, (3) whether populations are locally adapted and whether herbivory influences the relative fitness of populations, and (4) whether the intensity and effects of insect herbivory on reproductive output vary locally along a disturbance gradient and are associated with differences in plant resistance. 2. 2. Bird Species in Urban and Agricultural Landscapes : Bird diversity patterns along an urbanisation gradient and crop damage caused by birds on the Deccan Plateau, India

    Author : Manoj Ashokrao Kale; Prosun Bhattacharya; Gabor L. Lövei; Peter Kjellander; KTH; []
    Keywords : Bird assemblage structure; Forest-urban gradient; Scale-sensitive diversity; Crop depredation; Crop damage assessment; Deccan Plateau; India.; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : The major human activities that have transformed the Earth include agriculture and urbanization. The present study was conducted to contribute to a description of the effect on birds of urbanization and agriculture in an Indian region. READ MORE

  3. 3. FE-Simulation of Metal Cutting Processes

    Author : Ahmet Semih Ertürk; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Metal cutting; Ductile fracture; Gradient damage; Finite element method; Turning; Machining; Inverse identification;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the finite element (FE) simulation of machining processes. Realistic simulation of metal cutting processes enables a more resource-efficient machinability assessment for a given material in terms of cutting forces, chip shape and tool wear at different ranges of cutting conditions. 4. 4. Modeling of Inelastic Response of Metals with Emphasis on Cyclic Viscoplasticity

    Author : Magnus Ekh; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; large strains; integration; anisotropy; plasticity; creep; viscoplasticity; kinematic hardening; metals; damage; calibration;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the continuum modeling of the macroscopic behavior of engineering metals, in particular as part of life prediction strategies. Focus is primarily placed on the formulation and numerics of models for cyclic rate-dependent response. READ MORE

  5. 5. Modelling Damage Evolution and Fracture of Paper Materials

    Author : Rickard Hägglund; Hållfasthetslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Paper material; Fracture mechanics; Tensile strength; Fibre network; Continuum damage mechanics; Non-local theory;

    Abstract : This thesis contains six papers dealing with different aspects of damage and fracture in paper. The work addresses the problem of material length scales in the context of deformation and fracture of paper materials. READ MORE
