6. Distributed thermal response tests : New insights on U-pipe and Coaxial heat exchangers in groundwater-filled boreholes
Abstract : U-pipe Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHE) are widely used today in ground source heating and cooling systems in spite of their less than optimal performance. This thesis provides a better understanding on the function of U-pipe BHEs and Investigates alternative methods to reduce the temperature difference between the circulating fluid and the borehole wall, including one thermosyphon and three different types of coaxial BHEs. 7. Direct-Ground Cooling Systems for Office Buildings: Design and Control Considerations
Abstract : Direct-ground cooling systems are defined as systems in which the ground is used as the only source for cooling mainly in commercial buildings. These systems benefit from exchanging heat with the ground, of which its temperature is basically constant below a certain depth year around. READ MORE

8. Reduction of prime energy consumption by ground source heat pumps in a warmer world
Abstract : Much of the energy used worldwide is supplied by fossil fuels (~85 %) while renewable energy sources supply approximately 6 %. A sustainable future urgently requires worldwide efforts to reduce primary energy consumption and increase use of renewable energy sources. READ MORE

9. Evaluation of Modular Thermally Driven Heat Pump Systems
Abstract : The building sector accounts for approximately 40% of primary energy use within the European Union, therefore reductions in the energy use intensity of this sector are critical in decreasing total energy usage. Given that the majority of energy used within the built environment is for space conditioning and domestic hot water preparation, prudence would suggest that decreasing primary energy used for these end purposes would have the biggest overall environmental impact. 10. Frosting and Defrosting of Air-Coils
Abstract : Experience indicates that air-source heat pumps have more operating problems than ground-source heat pumps. One major factor pertains to the effects of frosting and the subsequent need for defrosting. This thesis reviews previous research and practical experience and presents novel experimental facilities to investigate the process of frosting. READ MORE
