1. On the binding of growth-promoting polyamines to proteoglycans: Implications for growth-regulation and polycation-mediated gene transfer
Abstract : Initial investigations were directed at studying the interaction between polyamines and various glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The polyamine spermine displayed binding to dermatan sulphate (DS) and heparan sulphate (HS) with similar (Kd, 3.9 x 10-4 M) and higher (Kd, 0.37 x 10-6 M) affinity, respectively, than to DNA. 2. Fermentation of Lignocellulosic Hydrolysates: Inhibition and Detoxification
Abstract : The ethanol yield and productivity obtained during fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates is decreased due to the presence of inhibiting compounds, such as weak acids, furans and phenolic compounds produced during hydrolysis. Evaluation of the effect of various biological, physical and chemical detoxification treatments by fermentation assays using Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to characterise inhibitors. READ MORE

3. Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Tumor Growth Inhibition and Cartilage Differentiation
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis has been focused on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In the two first studies, the effects of MSCs on tumor growth and development in vitro and in vivo was investigated. READ MORE

4. Growth control mechanisms in normal and neoplastic mammalian cells
Abstract : The main theme of the studies presented in this thesis is, the growth control mechanisms whose loss in normal cells predispose to or cause cancer. The balance between growth inhibitory and stimulatory mechanisms is crucial for the development and maintenance of a normal animal. READ MORE

5. Too close for comfort : The role of Contact-Dependent growth Inhibition (CDI) in interbacterial competition and cooperation
Abstract : Contact-Dependent growth inhibition (CDI) was discovered in 2005 in the E. coli isolate EC93. Since then our knowledge of CDI systems and their impact on bacterial communities have increased exponentially. READ MORE
