  1. 1. Water transport through perinatal skin : Barrier function and aquaporin water channels

    Author : Johan Ågren; Gunnar Sedin; Gunnar Flemström; Steven B Hoath; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Preterm infant; Transepidermal water loss; Aquaporin; Skin biology; Hyperosmolarity; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : While constituting a well functioning interface with the aqueous environment in utero, the skin offers a poor barrier after very preterm birth. As a result, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is high, a fact which has important clinical consequences in these infants. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ion transport and permeability in the isolated and the intact gastric mucosa

    Author : Gunnar Flemström; Uppsala universitet; []

  3. 3. Orexin Receptors in Recombinant CHO Cells : Signaling to Short- and Long-Term Cell Responses

    Author : Sylwia Ammoun; Jyrki Kukkonen; Karl Åkerman; Gunnar Flemström; Christer Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; orexins; cell signaling; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Abstract : Recently discovered neuropeptides orexins (orexin-A and -B) act as endogenous ligands for G-protein-coupled receptors called OX1 and OX2 receptors. Our previous studies have established model systems for investigation of the pharmacology and signaling of these receptors in recombinant CHO cells. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of Orexins, Guanylins and Feeding on Duodenal Bicarbonate Secretion and Enterocyte Intracellular Signaling

    Author : Magnus Wilhelm Bengtsson; Gunnar Flemström; Olof Nylander; Karl E. O. Åkerman; Per M. Hellström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physiology; alkaline secretion; carbohydrates; central nervous system; cholinergic stimulation; duodenum; enteric nervous system; enterochromaffin cell; fasting; feeding; glucose; guanylyl cyclase C; humans; hypocretin; intra-arterial; in situ; intracerebroventricular; luminal acid; luzindole; orexin-B; SB-334867; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The duodenal epithelium secretes bicarbonate ions and this is regarded as the primary defence mechanism against the acid discharged from the stomach. For an efficient protection, the duodenum must also function as a sensory organ identifying luminal factors. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of nitric oxide on gastric acid secretion in human gastric mucosa : functional and morphological studies

    Author : Anna Berg; Gunnar Flemström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Hydrochloric acid (HCI) is secreted in high amounts by parietal cells in the human gastric mucosa and the resulting low pH constitutes an important factor for creating a suitable environment for the digestion. The normal gastric mucosa is equipped with an arsenal of protective mechanisms against the extreme chemical environment which the gastric acid creates. READ MORE
