  1. 1. Fundamental Control Performance Limitations for Interarea Oscillation Damping and Frequency Stability

    Author : Joakim Björk; Karl H. Johansson; Lennart Harnefors; Joe H. Chow; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Power system control; HVDC transmission control; interarea oscillations; power oscillation damping; small-signal stability; fundamental control limitations; frequency stability; hydro power; wind power; non-minimum phase; zero dynamics; eigenvalue analysis; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : With the transition towards renewable energy and the deregulation of the electricity markets, the power system is changing. Growing electricity demand and more intermittent power production increase the need for transfer capacity. Lower inertia levels due to a higher share of renewables increase the need for fast frequency reserves (FFR). READ MORE

  2. 2. Resource-aware Wireless Process Control

    Author : Takuya Iwaki; Karl H. Johansson; Sophie Tarbouriech; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Industrial process control; Networked control systems; Wireless network; Event-triggered control; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : To tackle the ever-growing demands on high-quality and cost-effective industrial production, recent developments in embedded sensing, wireless communication, and cloud computing offer great opportunities. Resource-aware reliable wireless communication and real-time control are needed to leverage these technologies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Look-ahead control for fuel-efficient and safe heavy-duty vehicle platooning

    Author : Valerio Turri; Karl H. Johansson; Petros Ioannou; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; platoon; platooning; optimization; optimal control; model predictive control; automatic control; fuel efficiency; intelligent transport systems; automated driving; cooperative; dynamic programming; trucks; heavy-duty vehicles; safe platooning; fuel-efficient platooning; distributed model predictive control; MPC; vehicle-following; pulse and glide; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : The operation of heavy-duty vehicles at small inter-vehicular distances, known as platoons, lowers the aerodynamic drag and, therefore, reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Tests conducted on flat roads have shown the potential of platooning to reduce the fuel consumption of about 10%. READ MORE

  4. 4. Performance Quantification of Interarea Oscillation Damping Using HVDC

    Author : Joakim Björk; Karl H. Johansson; Lennart Harnefors; Robin Preece; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HVDC transmission control; interarea oscillations; power oscillation damping; small-signal stability; frequency control; controllability; MIMO control; decoupling control; multivariable interaction; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : With the transition towards renewable energy, and the deregulation of the electricity market, generation patterns and grid topology are changing. These changes increase the need for transfer capacity. One limiting factor, which sometimes leads to underutilization of the transmission grid, is interarea oscillations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Modelling, analysis and experimentation of a simple feedback scheme for error correction control

    Author : Oscar Flärdh; Karl H. Johansson; Mikael Johansson; Bo Bernhardsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Network Control; Error Correction; Multiple-Input Describing Function; Extremum Seeking Control; Sensor Network Experiments; Automatic control; Reglerteknik;

    Abstract : Data networks are an important part in an increasing number of applications with real-time and reliability requirements. To meet these demands a variety of approaches have been proposed. Forward error correction, which adds redundancy to the communicated data, is one of them. READ MORE
