  2. 2. Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses

    Author : Gülsen Özkaya Sahin; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; SIV; envelope; neutralizing antibody; breadth; potency; IgG; IgA; complement; antibody-dependent complement-mediated inactivation; virus evolution; diversity; divergence;

    Abstract : Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimulation, the preservation of CD4+ T and B cells, the conformation of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env), and the evolution of Env during infection. 3. 3. HIV-2 infection in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, with special reference to clinical, immunological and epidemiological aspects

    Author : Hans Norrgren; Sektion III; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infections; Africa; Guinea-Bissau; AIDS; HIV-1; HIV-2; Infektioner;

    Abstract : We have followed a cohort of police officers in Guinea-Bissau between 1990 and 1997 for the study of clinical, immunological and epidemiological aspects of HIV-2 infection. Initially the prevalence of HIV-2 was high (11.6 %) and HIV-1 infection was rare (0. READ MORE

  4. 4. HIV-2 genetic evolution and viral dynamics

    Author : Eleonor Brandin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV-2; antiretroviral treatment; resistance; pathogenesis; co-receptor; neutralization; viral dynamics;

    Abstract : HIV-2 is less pathogenic and less transmissible compared to HIV-1. This is believed to be due to the lower viral load that is seen in HIV-2 infected patients. However, why this lower viral load is seen is not known. In this thesis we have investigated different aspects of HIV-2 in order to understand the pathogenesis of HIV-2 better. READ MORE

  5. 5. HIV-1 evolution, disease progression and molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 single and HIV-1 and HIV-2 dual-infected individuals in Guinea-Bissau

    Author : Joakim Esbjörnsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; Guinea-Bissau; subtype; disease progression; evolution; coreceptor tropism; CXCR4; gp120; V1-V3; CD4%; CD8%; soluble immune markers;

    Abstract : The two genetically related human lentiviruses known today, HIV-1 (which is pandemic) and HIV-2 (which mainly is confined to West Africa), are the causative agents of AIDS. Progressive immune dysfunction and AIDS develop in most cases of untreated HIV-1 infection, but only in approximately 25-30% of HIV-2 infected individuals. READ MORE
