  1. 6. Optimizing cervical cancer prevention through screening and HPV vaccination

    Author : Klara Miriam Elfström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Effective primary and secondary prevention tools exist for cervical cancer in the form of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and cervical screening. In order to maximize the impact of prevention strategies in Sweden and European countries, this thesis sought to investigate the long-term effectiveness of different screening strategies and the long-term risk associated with HPV infections, the organization and quality of existing screening programs, and the effectiveness of alternative vaccination strategies. 2. 7. Immunological responses in genital HPV infections and etiology of cervical cancer

    Author : Lisen Arnheim; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HPV; CIN; cervical cancer; antibodies; KIRs; CXCL8; IFN-gamma; Chlamydia trachomatis;

    Abstract : Cervical cancer is one of the most common forms of cancers in women. Every year approximately 450,000 women are diagnosed worldwide and 200,000 die. The sexually transmitted oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types are established as the major etiological agents of cancer of the cervix. READ MORE

  3. 8. HPV and potential prognostic markers in primary vaginal carcinoma

    Author : Cecilia Ranhem; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this PhD thesis is to evaluate HPV status and immunohistochemical expression of different biomarkers, including tumor suppressor p16, proliferation marker Ki67, molecular markers in the LRIG family, WRAP53ß, and dyskerin as well as immune markers CD4+ and CD8+ TILs, and their correlation to clinical manifestations and survival as part of a search for potential prognostic factors in women diagnosed with primary vaginal cancer. Paper I evaluates the presence of HPV in vaginal cancer tumor samples, as well as immunohistochemical expression of p16 and Ki-67. READ MORE

  4. 9. Occurrence of human papillomaviruses (HPV) types in HPV related cancer and in the genital and oral tracts of young adults

    Author : Juan Du; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated to cancer of the uterine cervix, the third most common cancer among women, but also to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the sixth most common type of cancer in the world. HPV occurs in most cervical cancer (CC). READ MORE

  5. 10. HPV genotyping and potential progression markers in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia : clinical and diagnostic impact

    Author : Sophia Brismar Wendel; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to identify clinically useful early molecular markers to predict progression to carcinoma in women with preinvasive lesions of the cervix, for the purpose of improving care of these women and enabling more individualized treatment. In order to define the human papillomavirus (HPV) types in minor cytological abnormalities, 343 liquid-based cytology (LBC) samples with atypical squamous cells of uncertain significance (ASCUS) and with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) were genotyped using Linear Array.
