  1. 1. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation

    Author : Martin Fredholm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; strain echocardiography; right heart catheterization; cardiac surgery; heart failure; levosimendan; milrinone; left ventricular function; right ventricular function; systole; diastole; preload; afterload; pacing; longitudinal function; ventricular dimensions; ventricular interdependence;

    Abstract : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent. 2. 2. Health‐related quality of life, depression, sleep and breathing disorders in the elderly : With focus on those with impaired systolic function/heart failure

    Author : Peter Johansson; Ulf Dahlström; Anders Broström; Urban Alehagen; Peter Währborg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Elderly; cardiac function; chronic heart failure; health-related quality of life; depressive symptoms; prognosis; sleep disturbances; sleep disordered breathing; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe the prevalence of depressive symptoms, sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and sleep complaints, as well as to investigate the prognostic value of health-related quality of life (Hr-QoL) and depressive symptoms on mortality in an elderly community living population with a focus on those with impaired systolic function/heart failure (HF). Descriptive, prognostic and explorative study designs were used to examine if a single question about global perceived health (GPH) is associated with the domains of Hr-QoL as assessed by the SF-36 (I), as well as to evaluate whether GPH provided prognostic information concerning cardiovascular mortality (II). 3. 3. Effect of valve replacement for aortic stenosis on ventricular function

    Author : Ying Zhao; Michael Henein; Per Lindqvist; Eugenio Picano; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aortic stenosis; aortic valve replacement; echocardiography; speckle tracking; exercise echocardiography; ventricular function; septal radial motion; twist; displacement; strain; strain rate;

    Abstract : Background:Aortic stenosis (AS) is the commonest valve disease in the West. Aortic valve replacement (AVR) remains the only available management for AS and results in improved symptoms and recovery of ventricular functions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects of ethnicity on blood pressure regulating mechanisms and kidney function in a defined population

    Author : Christopher Nilsson; Allmänmedicin och samhällsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glomerular filtration rate GFR ; Renal function; Ethnicity; biomarker; Pro-enkephalin; Blood pressure; chronic kidney disase; ANDIS; diabetes; diabetics;

    Abstract : Background: Middle Eastern immigrants represent a growing population in Sweden today. This group are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes than the native population, but are also shown to exhibit unique properties; despite an abundance in traditional cardiometabolic risk factors such as obesity, dearranged blood lipids and diminished physical acitivity, this group seem to exhibit lower blood pressure levels. 5. 5. Methods for analysis of heart function

    Author : Håkan Kronander; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : There is a continuous demand for improvements in methods foranalysis of heart function. This thesis investigates both themeasurement of left ventricular (LV) volume for evaluating theheart function and the exercise electrocardiographic (ECG) testfor diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD).
