    Abstract : This thesis investigated the efficacy and safety of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) as a treatment of multiple sclerosis. This thesis demonstrates that when compared to one of the most powerful disease-modifying drugs (DMDs), specifically alemtuzumab (ALZ), AHSCT is able to hold its ground. 2. 2. Diversity and focus of CMV specific T-cell responses in patients post-HSCT and with solid tumor

    Author : Thomas Poiret; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Abstract : Human Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a beta-herpesvirus that commonly infects humans. Most symptoms in healthy individuals are very mild. The virus is never eliminated and remains in the individual life-long. Thus, CMV and the immune response stay in coexistence until the protective response remains. READ MORE

  3. 3. Infections in allogeneic stem cell transplanted patients : clinical and immunological aspects

    Author : Elda Sparrelid; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HSCT; bacteraemia invasive fungal infection; interstitial pneumonia; immunity.;

    Abstract : In allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), 30 to 40 % of transplant related mortality is associated with infection complications. This includes invasive bacterial and fungal infection, and interstitial pneumonia (IP), which are two important causes of morbidity and mortality. READ MORE

  4. 4. Late effects and health-related outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in childhood

    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is an established treatment for many acquired or congenital disorders of the hematopoietic system. For some patients it may be the only curative option. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immune reconstitution after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

    Author : Brigitta Omazic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Immune reconstitution; allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation; IgH gene expression; TcRVbeta gene expression; B lymphocytes; T lymphocytes; IGF-1 receptor; thyroid hormone receptor.;

    Abstract : After treatment with allogeneic hernatopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) the patient suffers from a deficient immune system for at least 12 months or longer. During this period, the patient is susceptible to infections and if the state of immune deficiency is prolonged there is an increased risk of relapse of the underlying malignancy as well as development of secondary malignancies.
