  1. 11. Inhibition of apoptosis by the Us3 protein kinase of herpes simplex virus 1

    Author : Anna Cartier; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Us3; unique short 3; HSV; herpes simplex virus; NK; natural killer; LAK; lymphokine activated killer; MHC; major histocompatibility complex;

    Abstract : The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) US3 protein kinase is part of the anti-apoptotic arsenal that salvage HSV-1-infected cells from damage caused by different stimuli. The Us3 gene encodes a protein kinase that phosphorylates serine/threonine residues within a specific arginine-rich consensus sequence. READ MORE

  2. 12. Genetic variants of herpes simplex virus type 1

    Author : Elham Rekabdar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; s simplex virus type 1; glycoprotein G; genovariants; intrastrain diversity;

    Abstract : Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) virus causes oral as well as genital lesions, and, on rare occasions, focal encephalitis and severe neonatal infections. Due to the partly overlapping clinical manifestations of infection with HSV-1 and its closest relative among herpesviruses, HSV-2, diagnostic methods are required to discriminate between infections with these two viruses. 3. 13. Interactions between herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein C and cell surface glycosaminoglycans

    Author : Kristina Mårdberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Herpes simplex virus-1; glycoprotein C; virus receptor; glycosaminoglycans; heparan sulfate; chondroitin sulfate;

    Abstract : The cell surface glycosaminoglycan (GAG) heparan sulfate (HS) serves as an initial receptor for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and virus attachment to the HS molecule is mediated by the envelope glycoprotein C (gC). In the first part of this thesis, we aimed to define the HS-binding domain of viral gC. READ MORE

  4. 14. Studies on host-related pathogenesis of herpes simplex type-1 encephalitis in rat

    Author : Biborka Bereczky-Veress; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In order to explore the molecular mechanisms of Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), a severe infection of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by Herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1); a rat model resembling the human condition was characterized in the DA (Dark Agouti) strain. After injection into the whiskers’ area HSV-1 entered the CNS at the level of the brain stem via the trigeminal ganglion, subsequently spreading to the thalamus, cortex and olfactory bulb, leading to death at five days post infection (dpi). 5. 15. Investigation of antiviral and anticancer nucleoside analog substrate recognition of drosophila melanogaster and herpes virus deoxyribonucleoside kinases

    Author : Nicola Solaroli; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The deoxyribonucleoside kinase of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (Dm-dNK) is a multisubstrate enzyme that phosphorylates pyrimidine and purine deoxyribonucleosides as well as several anticancer and antiviral nucleoside analogs. Dm-dNK is sequence related to the human deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), deoxyguanosine kinase (dGK) and thymidine kinase 2 (M), as well as to the herpes simplex virus type-1 thymidine kinase (Hsv-1 TK).
