  1. 11. Free Neutral Clusters and Liquids Studied by Electron Spectroscopy and Lineshape Modeling

    Author : Henrik Bergersen; Olle Björneholm; Svante Svensson; Gunnar Öhrwall; Maxim Tchaplyguine; Hans Ågren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physics; Clusters; Nano-particles; XPS; UPS; AES; Radial structure; Molecular dynamics; Density functional theory; Liquids; Liquid microjet; Solvation; Fysik;

    Abstract : The electronic and geometrical structure of free neutral clusters and liquids have been studied using synchrotron-radiation based photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopy in combination with lineshape modeling. A novel experimental setup has been developed for studies of liquids, based on the liquid microjet technique. READ MORE

  2. 12. Novel voltage source converter based HVDC transmission system for offshore wind farms

    Author : Stephan Meier; Hans-Peter Nee; Jan R. Svensson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Electric power engineering; Elkraftteknik;

    Abstract : Offshore wind farms have recently emerged as promising renewable energy sources. For increasing distances between offshore generation and onshore distribution grid, HVDC transmission systems based on voltage source converters can be a feasible and competitive solution. READ MORE

  3. 13. Political Representation in the European Union : A Multi-Channel Approach

    Author : Moa Mårtensson; Christer Karlsson; Sverker Gustavsson; Torsten Svensson; Hans Agné; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; political representation; EU; multi-channel approach; European Parliament; Council of Ministers; interest representation; linkage; Services Directive; social-network analysis; coordination; Statskunskap; Political Science;

    Abstract : The European Union (EU) is the most far-reaching attempt yet undertaken to institutionalize democratic policy-making beyond the nation-state. To what extent, and in what ways, do various channels of representation contribute towards the realization of this aim? This dissertation takes stock of current research on the EU’s system of representation, and seeks to expand its agenda so that this central question can be properly addressed. READ MORE

  4. 14. Theoretical modelling of tumour oxygenation and influences on treatment outcome

    Author : Iuliana Toma-Dasu; Mikael Karlsson; Svensson Hans; J F Fowler; Borivoj Vojnovic; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Radiation sciences; Computer simulation; Electrode; Polarographic measurements; Tumour oxygenation; Hypoxia; Strålningsvetenskap; Radiation biology; Strålningsbiologi; radiofysik; radiation physics;

    Abstract : One of the main problems in curing cancer resides in the different microenvironment existing in tumours compared to the normal tissues. The mechanisms of failure are different for radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but they all relate to the poor blood supply known to exist in tumours. READ MORE

  5. 15. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; β-carboline; neuromelanin; norharman; harman; parkinsonism; Parkinson s disease; motoric impairment; behaviour; glia cells; substantia nigra; dopamine melanin; PC12 cells; ER stress; grp78; hsp90; cytochrome P450; CYP1A1; CYP1B1; blood-brain interfaces; 7; 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; endothelial cell; smooth muscle cell; bioactivation; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Abstract : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. READ MORE
