  1. 21. Multiplex HLA-DR-DQ genotyping : for genetic epidemiology and clinical risk assessment

    Author : Ewa Lavant; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : HLA-DRB1; HLA-DQB1; HLA-DQA1; PCR-SSP; type 1 diabetes; celiac disease; autoimmune disease; capillary gel electrophoresis; genotyping;

    Abstract : The human leukocyte antigens (HLA) are highly polymorphic cell surface proteins encoded in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region on chromosome 6. The HLA system has been well known as transplantation antigens but the primary biological role of the HLA molecules is regulation of immune response by presenting peptide fragments to T-lymphocytes. 2. 22. Systematics, phylogeography and multiple origins of morphs in two species complexes belonging to Cistaceae, Helianthemum oelandicum and H. nummularium

    Author : Eman Soubani; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; introgression; parallel evolution; postglacial migration; genetic polymorphism; Pleistocene; morphometry; H. nummularium; Helianthemum oelandicum; cpDNA;

    Abstract : The Helianthemum oelandicum complex shows considerable morphological variation across its geographic distribution in Europe and western Asia. By combining four primer pairs and four restriction enzymes I identified nine cpDNA haplotypes with distinct geographical distributions. READ MORE

  3. 23. MHC polymorphism and host-pathogen interactions: The case of Borrelia in its reservoir host, the bank vole Myodes glareolus

    Author : Kristin Scherman; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Host-pathogen interaction; Negative frequency dependent selection; Myodes glareolus; Borrelia;

    Abstract : The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class IIB genes exhibit extensive allelic polymorphism, most likely maintained by pathogen-mediated balancing selection (PMBS). PMBS may operate in the form of heterozygote advantage (HA), and/or through the interaction of pathogens and specific MHC alleles via fluctuating selection (FS) or negative frequency-dependent selection (NFDS). 4. 24. Factors Influencing Evolution to Antimalarial Drug Resistance in Plasmodium falciparum in Sudan and The Gambia

    Author : Amany Kheir; Göte Swedberg; Susanne Kerje; Hamza Babiker; Staffan Svärd; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cross-mating; fitness; microsatellite haplotypes; mosquito infectivity; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Drug resistance is a major obstacle to management and control of malaria and currently progressing at a rapid rate across Africa. This thesis has examined factors influencing evolution of resistant P. falciparum at two sites in Africa, including parasite migration, cross mating and fitness cost of resistance. READ MORE

  5. 25. Population-based analysis of the HLA associated risk for IDDM

    Author : Ingrid Kockum; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; HLA-DR; HLA-DQAl; HLA-DQBl; predispositional allele test; absolute risk; relative predispositional effect; transmission rates; non-inherited maternal haplotypes.;

    Abstract : Insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) is one of the most common chronic illnesses among children and young adults in Sweden. The disease has a complex pattern of inheritance and environmental factors are important. The strongest linkage to IDDM is found on chromosome 6p21 in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) region. READ MORE
