  1. 1. Dimensions and projections

    Author : Anders Nilsson; Peter Wingren; Fredrik Georgsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fractals; Hausdorff dimension; box dimension; packing dimension; projections; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns dimensions and projections of sets that could be described as fractals. The background is applied problems regarding analysis of human tissue. One way to characterize such complicated structures is to estimate the dimension. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nontypical Behaviour of Orbits and Birkhoff Averages for Expanding Maps

    Author : David Färm; Matematik LTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; expanding maps; beta-shifts; large intersection classes; Hausdorff dimension;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of an introductory chapter followed by five papers. In the first paper, expanding maps on the unit interval are considered. The set of points for which the forward orbit is bounded away from a given point is studied. It is shown that this set has full Hausdorff dimension and that it has large intersection properties. 3. 3. Asymptotics of the Scenery Flow and Properties of the Fourier Dimension

    Author : Fredrik Ekström; Matematik LTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis is about the scenery flow and the Fourier dimension.The scenery flow is a semiflow on the space of Borel probability measures on the interval [-1, 1] that have the origin in their support. The flow acts on such a measure by enlarging it, restricting it back to [-1, 1] and renormalising it to a probability measure. READ MORE

  4. 4. On numbers badly approximable by q-adic rationals

    Author : Johan Nilsson; Matematik LTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Number theory; Symbolic dynamics; Combinatorics on words; Badly approximable numbers; Diophantine approximation; Mathematics; Matematik; Dynamical systems;

    Abstract : The thesis takes as starting point diophantine approximation with focus on the area of badly approximable numbers. For the special kind of rationals, the q-adic rationals, we consider two types of approimations models, a one-sided and a two-sided model, and the sets of badly approximable numbers they give rise to. 5. 5. Certain results on the Möbius disjointness conjecture

    Author : Davit Karagulyan; Michael Benedicks; Ana Rodrigues; Mariusz Lemanczyk; KTH; []
    Keywords : Dynamical Systems; Ergodic Theory; Number Theory; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : We study certain aspects of the Möbius randomness principle and more specifically the Möbius disjointness conjecture of P. Sarnak. In paper A we establish this conjecture for all orientation preserving circle homeomorphisms and continuous interval maps of zero entropy. READ MORE
