11. Pathophysiological role and clinical relevance of cytokines in hypertensive heart failure. A combined clinical and experimental study
Abstract : Although mortality due to heart failure has decreased significantly in the last decade since the introduction of ACE-inhibitors and ?-adrenergic receptor blockers in the management of heart failure, chronic heart failure is still one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality and has a very high frequency for readmission to hospitalization because of the aggravation of heart failure. This accounts for a significantly higher health-care expenditure that is twice as much the cost for cancer. READ MORE

12. Dynamics of the glomerular filtration barrier - Physiological and pathophysiological aspects
Abstract : The dynamic properties of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) are of fundamental importance for the understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of microalbuminuria and proteinuric diseases. In the studies of this doctoral thesis the properties of the rat glomerular filtration barrier were investigated under resting conditions and following a number of challenges using highly sensitive gel filtration chromatography (HPSEC) detection of FITC-Ficoll in serum and urine. 13. Inhibition of acute allogaft rejection - experimental transplant studies with biological and chemical immunosuppressants
Abstract : In clinical transplantation immunosuppressive agents are used in combination with the objective to achieve additive effects and less toxicity. A large number of novel drugs are candidates for clinical introduction at this time and experiments in animal models have an important role to play. READ MORE

14. The Role of Angiotensin II in Experimental Acute Kidney Injury and Cardiorenal Failure
Abstract : Blood pressure and fluid regulation are kept constant through the interaction between heart and kidneys. When the systemic blood pressure decreases, the levels of the hormone Angiotensin II increase, leading to vasoconstriction and therefore increased blood pressure. READ MORE

15. Congenital malformations in experimental diabetic pregnancy : Aetiology and antioxidative treatment
Abstract : Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy causes congenital malformations in the offspring. The aim of this work was to characterize biochemical and morphologic anomaliesin the conceptus of an animal model of diabetic pregnancy. In addition, apreventive treatment against diabetes-induced dysmorphogenesis was developed. READ MORE
