  1. 1. Heart Valve Surgery : Preoperative Assessment and Clinical Outcome

    Author : Laila Hellgren; Elisabeth Ståhle; Mårten Rosenquist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Heart valve surgery; magentic resonance imaging; echocardiography; operative mortality; survival; complications; quality of life; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : A more global analysis of the outcome of heart valve surgery is desirable to reflect the actual benefit for the patient. This thesis focuses on the preoperative assessment of the patient, and the outcome after surgery with regard to operative mortality, long-term survival, valve-related complications, and quality of life. 2. 2. Prosthetic aortic heart valves

    Author : Natalie Glaser; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Aortic valve replacement (AVR) can be performed with different types of valve prostheses. There is no perfect aortic valve prosthesis, and the prosthetic choice for each patient requires careful consideration. This thesis evaluates mortality, morbidity, and prosthetic valve function after AVR with different aortic valve prostheses. READ MORE

  3. 3. Noninvasive haemodynamic evaluation of aortic valve prostheses : Doppler echocardiographic studies at rest and during exercise

    Author : Maria J Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : heart valve prosthesis; aortic valve replacement; Doppler echocardiography; exercise; haemodynamics; valve resistance;

    Abstract : The present series of investigations was designed to supply information on in vivo pressure-flow relationships and to analyse the incidence of regurgitation in different heart valve prostheses in the aortic position. Patients and methods: The study population comprised 185 patients with mechanical Björk-Shiley Monostrut prostheses, 54 patients with Biocor stented porcine bioprostheses, 50 patients with extended Biocor stentless bioprostheses and 59 patients with cryopreserved aortic homografts. 4. 4. Studies on the interaction of human cells with transplantable materials for skin repair and cardiovascular surgery

    Author : Katarina Jansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cell culture; Keratinocytes; Fibroblasts; Endothelial cells; Reepithelialization; In vitro endothelialization; Tissue engineering; Biomaterial: Dermal substitute; Synthetic vascular graft; Heart valve bioprosthesis;

    Abstract : Tissue engineering is becoming an important field for the development of new tissues in vitro for replacement of diseased or worn out parts of the body. This thesis describes some characteristics of cultured human cells seeded on transplantable materials for skin repair and cardiovascular surgery. READ MORE
