1. Heat exposure and health outcomes in Costa Rican sugarcane harvesters
Abstract : Background The remarkably efficient mechanisms of the human body to maintain its core temperature of 37°C can be inadequate when harsh climatic conditions and excessive muscle movement lead to heat stress, dehydration and potential heat illness, ranging from minor symptoms such as fatigue to a potentially fatal heat stroke. Agricultural workers in the tropics are at high risk, which is expected to increase with climate change. READ MORE

2. The conserved methionines in the chloroplast small heat shock protein - Role in chaperone-substrate interactions and effects of methionine sulfoxidation on chaperone activity
Abstract : The chloroplast-localized small heat shock protein (sHsp) Hsp21 belongs to the family of alpha-crystallin like sHsps which form large oligomeric structures and protect partly unfolded aggregation-prone proteins against aggregation. The main focus for this thesis has been on the highly conserved methionines in Hsp21. READ MORE

3. Coping with Stress : Regulation of the Caulobacter crescentus cell cycle in response to environmental cues
Abstract : All organisms have to respond to environmental changes to maintain cellular and genome integrity. In particular, unicellular organisms like bacteria must be able to analyze their surroundings and rapidly adjust their growth mode and cell cycle program in response to environmental changes, such as changes in nutrient availability, temperature, osmolarity, or pH. 4. Occupational heat exposure and kidney disease - Studies on the role of heat stress in the Mesoamerican epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of non-traditional origin
Abstract : This thesis examines the association between heat stress and kidney disease in Mesoamerica using different perspectives and methods. An ecologic study found that hot, sugarcane-cultivating regions had elevated chronic kidney disease (CKD) mortality. READ MORE

5. Clothing Evaporative Resistance: Its Measurements and Application in Prediction of Heat Strain
Abstract : Clothing evaporative resistance is one of the most important inputs for both the modelling and for standards dealing with thermal comfort and heat stress. It might be determined on guarded hotplates, on sweating manikins or even on human subjects. READ MORE
