  1. 1. Novel diagnostic microarray assay formats towards comprehensive on-site analysis

    Author : Jesper Gantelius; Helene Andersson-Svahn; Christer Wingren; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; magnetic microbeads; gold nanobeads; microarrays; lateral flow; on-site diagnosis; SNPs; pestivirus; autoimmunity; contagious bovine pleuropneumonia; comsol multiphysics; finite element method; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Advances in molecular methods for analyzing DNA, RNA and proteins in humans as well as in other animals, plants, fungi, bacteria or viruses have greatly increased the resolution with which we can study life’s complexity and dynamics on earth. While genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic laboratory tools for molecular diagnosis of disease are rapidly becoming more comprehensive, the access to such advanced yet often expensive and centralized procedures is limited. 2. 2. Droplet microfluidics for high throughput biological analysis

    Author : Håkan Jönsson; Helene Andersson-Svahn; Andrew Griffiths; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Microfluidics; Droplet microfluidics; High throughput biology; Single cell analysis; Hydrodynamic separation; Enzyme amplification; Fluorescence polarization; Microfabrication; Bioengineering; Bioteknik; SRA - Molecular Bioscience; SRA - Molekylär biovetenskap;

    Abstract : Many areas of biological research increasingly perform large-scale analyses.  In genomics the entire gene repertoire of an organism is analyzed.  Proteomics attempts to understand the function and expression patterns of all proteins in a cell or organism. READ MORE

  3. 3. Live Single Cell Imaging and Analysis Using Microfluidic Devices

    Author : Mohammad Ali Khorshidi; Helene Andersson-Svahn; Håkan Jönsson; Carolina Wählby; Johan Elf; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Single cell analysis; time-lapse fluorescence imaging; automated image analysis; microwell; droplet microfluidics; NK cells; single cell tracking; migration behavior analysis; cell-cell interaction; optical microscopy; image analysis; image processing; microfluidics; immune cells; tracking; counting; morphology analysis;

    Abstract : Today many cell biological techniques study large cell populations where an average estimate of individual cells’ behavior is observed. On the other hand, single cell analysis is required for studying functional heterogeneities between cells within populations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Novel methods for improving rapid paper-based protein assays with gold nanoparticle detection

    Author : Lara Lama; Helene Andersson Svahn; Jesper Gantelius; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Gold nanoparticles; ultrasound energy; signal enhancement; diagnostics; microarrays; paper-based assays; COMSOL Multiphysics simulations; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : This thesis describes methods for improving sensitivity in rapid singleplex and multiplex microarray assays. The assays utilize the optical characteristics of colloidal gold nanoparticles for the colorimetric detection of proteins.Multiplexed detection in sandwich immunoassays is limited by cross-reactivity between different detection antibodies. 5. 5. Microwell devices for single-cell analyses

    Author : Sara Lindström; Helene Andersson-Svahn; Mehmet Toner; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microwell; miniaturization; microfluidics; cell culture; single-cell; clone; imaging; stem cell; cancer; low volume; high-throughput; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Powerful tools for detailed cellular studies are emerging, increasing the knowledge ofthe ultimate target of all drugs: the living cell. Today, cells are commonly analyzed inensembles, i.e. thousands of cells per sample, yielding results on the average responseof the cells. READ MORE
