1. Macrophages, Nitric oxide synthases and Heme oxygenases: possible roles during peripheral nerve regeneration
Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the suggestions that macrophages, and the systems generating nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO), i.e. nitric oxide synthases (NOS) and heme oxygenases (HO), could be important for peripheral nerve regeneration. READ MORE

2. Nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO): A novel class of messenger molecules regulating insulin and glucagon secretion
Abstract : During the last decade it has been shown that nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) are produced in our own body, and that they constitute a novel class of messenger molecules. In 1992 a constitutive NO-producing NO-synthase (cNOS) was found in the islets of Langerhans, and in 1997 we could show for the first time that the islets also contained a CO-producing constitutive heme oxygenase (HO-2). 3. Regulation of Insulin Secretion in Relation to Nitric Oxide, Carbon Monoxide and Acid alpha-Glucoside Hydrolase Activities
Abstract : The main stimulus for insulin secretion is elevated blood glucose levels. In this thesis the aim was to study less well-known systems involved in the complex regulation of glucose-stimulated insulin release, emphasizing the role of the lysosomal/vacuolar system and the associated glycogenolytic acid alpha-glucoside hydrolases, but also the HO-CO and NOS-NO systems. 4. Oxidative stress-related factors in abdominal aortic aneurysm: potential clinical implications
Abstract : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a mostly silent vascular disease, with a rupture-related mortality rate exceeding 80%. To aid in future diagnosis and prognosis efforts, the studies included in the present thesis have explored the role of specific oxidative stress-related factors in the context of AAA using two population-based cohorts: AAA screening cohort of 65-year-old males (n = 421) and the Malmö diet and cancer study (MDCS) (n = 25252). 5. Response mechanisms of normal hematopoietic cells and leukemic cells to genotoxic agents and novel therapeutic strategies
Abstract : Hematopoiesis is initiated by a rare population of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in the bone marrow (BM). HSCs give rise to red blood cells and white blood cells of myeloid and lymphoid lineages. READ MORE
