  1. 11. The role of the thromboinflammatory response under hemolytic conditions : pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic inhibition

    Author : Alexandra Gerogianni; Per H. Nilsson; Camilla Mohlin; Tom Eirik Mollnes; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Mihály Józsi; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hemolysis; heme; thromboinflammation; biomaterials; complement inhibition; LVAD; IONPs; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedicinsk vetenskap; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : In blood circulation, the complement and the coagulation cascades, together with platelets and endothelial cells form a complex network of crosstalk. When dysregulated, these interactions can lead to inflammation in combination with thrombosis (thromboinflammation) and the manifestation of pathophysiological complications. READ MORE

  2. 12. Theoretical aspects of tetrapyrrole biochemistry

    Author : Kasper Jensen; Beräkningskemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Proteiner; enzymologi; Theoretical chemistry; quantum chemistry; Teoretisk kemi; kvantkemi; enzymology; Proteins; protein; enzyme; density functional; Heme; B12;

    Abstract : Modern theoretical simulations are able to provide significant insight into biochemical problems on a scale which continues to expand. With the aid of computer power and the sophisticated programs of researchers in the field, we have addressed a series of problems related to the so-called tetrapyrrole cofactors found in all living organisms. 3. 13. Studies on Haemproteins of Gram-positive Bacteria - Implications as Antibacterial Drug Targets

    Author : Peter Kjelgaard; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; heme; Truncated hemoglobins; cytochrome c maturation; cytochrome bd; ResB; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : With the discovery of antibiotics, several diseases that were previously lethal is today readily cured, or so we thought. Some degree of resistance to one or several antibiotics can be found among many strains of clinical important bacteria. READ MORE

  4. 14. Oxidative stress-related factors in abdominal aortic aneurysm: potential clinical implications

    Author : Sakshi Vats; Allmänmedicin och klinisk epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; abdominal aortic aneurysm AAA ; mitochondria; Heme; Oxidative stress; Genetics; Epigenetic;

    Abstract : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a mostly silent vascular disease, with a rupture-related mortality rate exceeding 80%. To aid in future diagnosis and prognosis efforts, the studies included in the present thesis have explored the role of specific oxidative stress-related factors in the context of AAA using two population-based cohorts: AAA screening cohort of 65-year-old males (n = 421) and the Malmö diet and cancer study (MDCS) (n = 25252). 5. 15. Ferrochelatase and Magnesiumchelatase: Metal chelation studied with mutants

    Author : Ulf Olsson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; chlorophyll; heme; barley; mutants; Magnesium chelatase; ferrochelatase; Metabolism; Biokemi; metabolism;

    Abstract : Magnesium chelatase and ferrochelatase are two very important enzymes, which are involved in chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis, respectively. They both use protoporphyrin IX as substrate but magnesium chelatase inserts a magnesium ion whereas ferrochelatase inserts a ferrous ion. These two enzymes have been studied in this thesis. READ MORE
