  1. 16. New Tools for Analysis of Wood and Pulp Components - Application of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectroscopy and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis

    Author : Anna Jacobs; KTH; []
    Keywords : Capillary zone electrophoresis; carbohydrate composition; degree of acetylation; degree of polymerization; enzymatic hydrolysis; hardwood; hemicellulose; hexenuronic acid; lignin; MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy; molar mass; molar mass distribution; olig;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE),matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight massspectroscopy (MALDI-MS) and size-exclusion chromatography incombination with off-line MALDI-MS (SEC/MALDI-MS) have beenapplied successfully to the analysis of wood and pulpcomponents.The carbohydrate compositions of pulp and holocellulosesamples, as well as of isolated hemicellulose preparations,were determined employing enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequentanalysis of the saccharides released by CZE. 2. 17. Structure and Function of Beta-Mannanases from Glycoside Hydrolase Clan A. A Study of Hemicellulases from Microbes and a Mollusc

    Author : Lars Anderson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Proteiner; enzymologi; enzymology; Proteins; subsite organisation; transglycosylation; enzyme kinetics; beta-mannanase; hemicellulose;

    Abstract : Hemicellulose is the second most abundant group of renewable polysaccharides. Mannans can be found as the major hemicellulose in softwood and as storage polysaccharides in a range of plants. In this work, structural and functional characterisations of family 5 and 26 endo-1,4-b-mannanases (b-mannanases) have been performed. READ MORE

  3. 18. Discovery of fiber-active enzymes in Populus wood

    Author : Henrik Aspeborg; KTH; []
    Keywords : Populus; xylogenesis; secondary cell wall; cellulose; hemicellulose; microarrays; transcript profiling; carbohydrate-active enzyme; glycosyltransferase; glycoside hydrolase;

    Abstract : Renewable fibers produced by forest trees provide excellentraw material of high economic value for industrialapplications. Despite this, the genes and corresponding enzymesinvolved in wood fiber biosynthesis in trees are poorlycharacterized. READ MORE

    Abstract : Forest biomass is expected to play an increasingly important role in tomorrow´s global bio-economy as one of the main renewable sources of materials, chemicals and energy. In the framework of the biorefinery concept, the forestry industry is looking for new processes to utilize several fractions in the biomass (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin etc. READ MORE

  5. 20. Xylan sorption kinetics at industrial conditions

    Author : Espen Ribe; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sorption; Yield; Sorption conditions; Kinetics; Kraft cooking; Hemicellulose; Modelling; Black liquor; Xylan;

    Abstract : The kraft process is the most utilised method for the production of wood based chemical pulp for paper applications. During a kraft cook about half of the wood material is dissoluted into the cooking liquor making the liberation of individual fibres possible. This low yield is a great disadvantage for process economy. READ MORE
