  1. 1. Protein Engineering of Extracellular Superoxide Dismutase : Characterization of Binding to Heparin and Cellular Surfaces

    Author : Ing-Marie Ahl; Lena Tibell; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Steen Vang Petersen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Accumulating evidence indicates that oxygen free radicals are involved in many diseases and pathological conditions, such as aging, inflammation, reperfusion damage of ischemic tissue and various cardiovascular diseases. Extracellular superoxide dismutase (ECSOD) thus plays a major role in the maintenance of cells by providing protection against these toxic substances in the extracellular space. READ MORE

  2. 2. Engineering more efficient multipotent mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells for systemic delivery as cellular therapy

    Author : Guido Moll; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : multipotent mesenchymal stromal stem cell;

    Abstract : Do mesenchymal progenitor cells naturally circulate in vivo? Are they fundamentally compatible with blood? What mechanism allows them to be in contact with blood? How do we make therapeutic cells with blood-compatible properties? Can we optimise their survival and therapeutic function upon systemic delivery? How should we best isolate and condition therapeutic multipotent mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells (MSCs) before infusion, to achieve an optimum and sustainable clinical response in patients? This thesis covers many aspects related to these questions. It describes how MSCs interact with the instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) upon infusion. READ MORE

  3. 3. Structural and functional studies of C4b-binding protein (C4BP)

    Author : Lena Kask; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; phagocytosis; apoptosis; protein S; complement control protein CCP domains; factor H fH ; Complement; C4b-binding protein C4BP ; intracellular assembly; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is complement inhibitor C4b-binding protein (C4BP), on which we have performed both structural and functional studies. Complement is part of the innate immune defence and eliminates microbes, solubilises immune complexes and is involved in the clearance of apoptotic cells. READ MORE

  4. 4. Enhancing the efficiency of viral and non-viral gene delivery vectors

    Author : Safa Bazaz; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Gene therapy, which involves the introduction, alteration, or deletion of genetic material within cells to treat or prevent disease, holds great promise for addressing various genetic disorders and other medical conditions. However, several challenges remain in the field, particularly concerning nucleic acid delivery into target cells. READ MORE

  5. 5. Leukocyte recruitment and control of vascular permeability in acute inflammation

    Author : Ellinor Kenne; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The inflammatory process is fundamental in host defense against tissue injury or infection. However, the inflammatory reaction may itself cause harm to the host and contribute to tissue damage and organ dysfunction. Leukocyte recruitment and edema formation are key components of the inflammatory response. READ MORE
