6. Observations and analysis of water in molecular outflows and shocks
Abstract : This thesis describes observations and analysis of molecular outflows from young stellar objects. The observations using the Odin satellite are described in Paper I, where a non-LTE radiative transfer code has been used to estimate the ortho-water abundance in seven molecular outflows and one super-nova remnant. 7. Sources of Dust Extinction in Type Ia Supernovae : Measurements and constraints from X-rays to the Infrared
Abstract : The use of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as distance indicators is essential for studying the expansion history of the Universe and for exploring the nature of dark energy. However, a lack of understanding of the progenitor systems and the empirically derived colour-brightness corrections represent severe limitations for SNe Ia as cosmological probes. READ MORE

8. Molecular observations of obscured galaxy nuclei
Abstract : It is becoming evident that some (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 L☉ emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscured nature of these objects, their inner regions are hidden from examination using optical or infrared lines. READ MORE

9. NbN and NbTiN Hot Electron Bolometer THz Mixers
Abstract : The thesis reports the development of Hot Electron Bolometer (HEB) mixers for radio astronomy heterodyne receivers in THz frequency range. Part of this work is the fabrication of HEB devices, which are based on NbN or NbTiN superconducting thin films (≤5 nm). They are integrated with wideband spiral or double-slot planar antennas. 10. Water and hydroxyl in luminous infrared galaxies: Spectroscopic observations and modelling
Abstract : Many luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 Lsun emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscuring material in these regions, the nature of the nuclear power source cannot be determined using direct observations in the optical or IR. READ MORE
