  1. 1. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton

    Author : Carina Pålsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; limnology; mixotrophy; phagotrophy; phytoplankton; oligotrophic; clear-water lakes; grazing; competition; nutrient enrichment; autotrophy; heterotrophy; bacterial ingestion; Hydrobiology; Marinbiologi; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. READ MORE

  2. 2. Proteomic profiles and gene expressions in the symbiotically competent cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. PCC 73102

    Author : Liang Ran; Birgitta Bergman; Karl Forchhammer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Nostoc PCC 73102; hormogonia; 2-DE; symbiosis; photo-autotrophy; heterotrophy; cell differentiation; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Nostoc PCC 73102 is an evolutionary important cyanobacterium with multiple phenotypic traits and symbiotic capacities. Based on two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, a proteomic approach was developed in order to obtain protein profiles of this symbiotically competent cyanobacterium during three trophic types/life stages: free-living photo-autotrophic and diazotrophic growth conditions, dark heterotrophic conditions and hormogonium formation. 3. 3. Wastewater treatment and biomass generation by Nordic microalgae : growth in subarctic climate and microbial interactions

    Author : Lorenza Ferro; Christiane Funk; Francesco Gentili; Luísa Gouveia; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microalgae; Wastewater; Nitrogen; Phosphate; Biomass; Lipids; Subarctic Climate; Light; Temperature; Bacteria; Photoautotrophy; Heterotrophy; Mixotrophy; HRAP; Metabarcoding; Microbial Communities; Alpha-diversity; Environmental Factors; Biochemistry; biokemi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Nordic native microalgal strains were isolated, genetically classified and tested for their ability to grow in municipal wastewater. Eight of the isolated strains could efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphate in less than two weeks. Two of these strains, Coelastrella sp. READ MORE

  4. 4. Regulation of carbon dioxide emission from Swedish boreal lakes and the Gulf of Bothnia

    Author : Grete Algesten; Mats Jansson; Pirkko Kortelainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; lakes; boreal; Gulf of bothnia; CO2; NEE; DOC; mineralization; sediment; catchment; net heterotrophy; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : The global carbon cycle is subject to intense research, where sources and sinks for greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide in particular, are estimated for various systems and biomes. Lakes have previously been neglected in carbon balance estimations, but have recently been recognized to be significant net sources of CO2. READ MORE

  5. 5. Benthic-Pelagic Microbial Interactions and Carbon Cycling in Clearwater Lakes

    Author : Eva Andersson; Anna-Kristina Brunberg; Lars Tanvik; Kristina Sundbäck; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; microphytobenthos; phytoplankton; heterotrophic bacteria; interactions; nutrients; carbon cycling; clearwater lakes; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the interactions among microbiota in clearwater lakes. Field sampling and field experiments were performed to evaluate interactions among microbiota and the importance of benthic versus pelagic microbiota in terms of biomass and production. In addition, carbon cycling in an oligotrophic clearwater lake was calculated. READ MORE
