  1. 1. Towards a Translational Pain Model - Techniques and developments

    Author : Leila Etemadi; Neuronano Research Center (NRC); []
    Keywords : UVB irradiation; Pain; Neuropeptides; Inflammation; Contralateral; Lateral spinal nucleus; Micro-array electrodes; Pan-neuronal markers; immunohistochemistry;

    Abstract : Pain is a major health issue for each affected individual and has a large impact on health costs. Most of our knowledge about this defensive system rely on data from different animal experiments. There is an obvious need for a translational pain model allowing comparisons between experimental animals and humans. READ MORE

  2. 2. Transvaginal mesh for pelvic organ prolapse : clinical and histological aspects

    Author : Caroline Elmér; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The objectives of this thesis were to assess the objective, clinical, and sexual outcomes after transvaginal surgery for pelvic organ prolapse using a trocar guided mesh kit, to ascertain the vaginal in vivo histological inflammatory response to large mesh, and to identify possible risk factors associated with exposures after transvaginal mesh surgery. A prospective multicenter cohort study was performed between June 2006 and March 2007 throughout 26 clinics in the Nordic countries. READ MORE

  3. 3. Biological and histological factors as predictors in rectal cancer patients : A study in a clinical trial of preoperative radiotherapy

    Author : Annica Holmqvist; Xiao-Feng Sun; Gunnar Adell; Jan-Erik Frödin; Östergötlands Läns Landsting; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : With improved surgical techniques and preoperative radiotherapy (RT) the local recurrence rate in rectal cancer patients has been reduced, however the mortality rate is still high and there is a huge variation in the response to preoperative RT in patients with the same tumour stage. To improve patient’s survival, it is of great importance to identify good prognostic and predictive factors that help us to select the best suited patients for preoperative RT in the future. 4. 4. Automated Tissue Image Analysis Using Pattern Recognition

    Author : Jimmy Azar; Anders Hast; Ewert Bengtsson; Martin Simonsson; Marco Loog; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tissue image analysis; pattern recognition; digital histopathology; immunohistochemistry; paired antibodies; histological stain evaluation; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Automated tissue image analysis aims to develop algorithms for a variety of histological applications. This has important implications in the diagnostic grading of cancer such as in breast and prostate tissue, as well as in the quantification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers that may help assess the risk of recurrence and the responsiveness of tumors to endocrine therapy. 5. 5. Development of techniques to determine extracellular matrix alterations in acute and chronic lung diseases and bioengineered tissues

    Author : Iran Augusto Silva; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Histology; semi-quantive score system; Biomaterial; ARDS; animal model;

    Abstract : Acute and chronic lung diseases are a major cause of global mortality. While pharmacological approaches exist, no therapies are curative. The only option at end-stage disease is lung transplantation which is hampered by a chronic shortage of donor organs. READ MORE
