  1. 21. Tailoring Properties of Materials at the Nanoscale

    Author : Hossein Raanaei; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Igor A. Abrikosov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Multilayers; magnetic anysotropy; amorphous materials; Magnetism; Magnetism; Materiefysik; Physics of Matter;

    Abstract : The knowledge of growth and characterizing techniques is essential for the preparation of high quality thin films and multilayers. Here, structural properties have been investigated by X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy while the composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. 2. 22. Growth of high quality Fe thin films : A study of the effect of mismatch strain on the physical properties of Fe

    Author : Anna Lena Ravensburg; Vassilios Kapaklis; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Tomas Kubart; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; thin film growth; crystal quality; strain; magnetism; electronic transport; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The work in this licentiate is devoted to investigating the epitaxial growth of thin Fe layers on MgAl2O4 (001) and MgO (001) substrates using dc magnetron sputtering. The aim is to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the crystal quality of the grown Fe layers depending on their thickness, substrate material, and selected deposition parameters. READ MORE

  3. 23. Order and interfaces in epitaxial heterostructures : Structure and magnetism

    Author : Anna L. Ravensburg; Vassilios Kapaklis; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Gunnar K. Pálsson; Martina Müller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The work in this dissertation is devoted to investigating order and interfaces in epitaxial heterostructures. To achieve that the software tool box GenL was developed for simulating and fitting x-ray diffraction patterns from epitaxial thin films, which is used to access structural information on the length scales of interfaces and atomic bonds. Abstract : Demands for zero greenhouse-gas emission vehicles have sharpened with today’s increased focus on global warming. Hydrogen storage is a key technology for the implementation of hydrogen powered vehicles. READ MORE

  5. 25. Phase transitions in magnetic metamaterials

    Author : Björn Erik Skovdal; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Vassilios Kapaklis; Gunnar K. Pálsson; Peter Schiffer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic metamaterials; artificial spin ice; mesospins; magnetic nanostructures; mesoscopic spin systems; multiscale materials; tri-criticality; emergence; edge modes;

    Abstract : Magnetic metamaterials consisting of arrays of densely packed, two-dimensional nanoscale magnetic islands have degrees of freedom on two separate length scales: inside the islands, and among them. These degrees of freedom can be tuned by e.g. size, shape, island separation and lattice geometry. READ MORE
