  1. 21. Assessing Holocene and late Pleistocene geomagnetic dipole field variability

    Author : Andreas Nilsson; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geomagnetic field; palaeomagnetism; the Holocene; dipole tilt; dipole moment; cosmogenic radionuclides;

    Abstract : Palaeomagnetic studies of continuous geological archives and archaeological artefacts are required to reconstruct geomagnetic field changes beyond the range of historical observations. In this thesis I assess the reliability of sedimentary palaeomagnetic data and Holocene dipole field reconstructions. READ MORE

  2. 22. Palaeoenvironmental changes in the northern boreal zone of Finland: local versus regional drivers

    Author : Shyhrete Shala; Karin H. Helmens; Christian Bigler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeolimnology; Palaeoecology; Biological assemblages; Sediment geochemistry; Regional drivers; Local drivers; Quantitative temperature reconstructions; Transfer-functions; Holocene; MIS 5d-c; Northern boreal zone; NE Finland; kvartärgeologi; Quaternary Geology;

    Abstract : Multiple proxies derived from the Lake Loitsana sediment sequence (NE Finland) are employed to determine the timing of deglaciation, characterise an early Holocene proglacial lake stage and reconstruct Holocene lake development. Local-scale processes causing shifts in biological assemblages are identified and the most likely Holocene mean July air temperature (Tjul) development is assessed. READ MORE

  3. 23. Fire history in the hemiboreal and southern boreal zones of southern Sweden during 11000 years : Relationships with past vegetation composition and human activities and implications for biodiversity issues

    Author : Qiao-Yu Cui; Marie-José Gaillard; Boris Vannière; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fire history; land-use history; biodiversity; charcoal analysis; Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm LRA ; Holocene; Småland; Sweden; Paleoecology; Paleoekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis studies fire history over the last 11 000 years (Holocene) in central Småland, southern Sweden, on the basis of palaeoecological analyses of peat sequences from three small bogs (Notteryd, Stavsåkra and Storasjö). The main objective is to gain insights into the long-term relationships between fire, climate, human-impact, other environmental factors and the history of biodiversity in the study region. 4. 24. Geophysical Applications of Vegetation Modeling

    Author : Jed O Kaplan; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; Växtbiokemi; Plant biochemistry; CH4; CO2; stable isotopes; carbon cycle; wetland; ice core; methane; Holocene; mammoths; tundra; ice age; LGM; biogeography; biome; biogeochemistry; Vegetation model; Miljökemi; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development and selected applications of a global vegetation model, BIOME4. The model is applied to problems in high-latitude vegetation distribution and climate, trace gas production, and isotope biogeochemistry. READ MORE

  5. 25. Vegetation history, human impact and palaeogeography of West Estonia : Pollen analytical studies of lake and bog sediments

    Author : Siim Veski; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Vegetation history; human impact; palaeogeography; shoreline displacement; The Baltic Sea; the Yoldia Sea; the Ancylus Lake; the Litorina Sea; pollen analysis; macro fossil analysis; bog and lake sediments; radiocarbon dating; Holocene; Estonia; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : The history of Holocene vegetation in western Estonia and the West Estonian Archipelago is described. Early Holocene sea level changes in the area are reconstructed, and human impact on the vegetation during the Late Holocene is discussed West Estonia was divided into five study areas (Rummu-Maardu, Mustjärve, Velise-Kiilaspere, Tôstamaa Peninsula, and northern Saaremaa in the West Estonian Archipelago, from north to south).
