  1. 1. Group I Introns and Homing Endonucleases in T-even-like Bacteriophages

    Author : Linus Sandegren; Britt-Marie Sjöberg; Renée Schroeder; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteriophage; Self-splicing introns; Homing endonucleases; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Homing endonucleases are rare-cutting enzymes that cleave DNA at a site near their own location, preferentially in alleles lacking the homing endonuclease gene (HEG). By cleaving HEG-less alleles the homing endonuclease can mediate the transfer of its own gene to the cleaved site via a process called homing, involving double strand break repair. READ MORE

  2. 2. Homing Endonucleases and Horizontal Gene Transfer in Bacteria and Bacteriophages

    Author : David Nord; Britt-Marie Sjöberg; Steinar Johansen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dsDNA cleavage; ribonucleotide reductase; GIY-YIG motif; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Homing endonuclease genes (HEGs) are selfish genetic elements that mediate their own super-Mendelian inheritance. This is mediated by the homing endonuclease cleavage of a HEG- allele followed by recombination-repair with a HEG+ allele.The majority of the HEGs are encoded in intervening sequences (IVSs). 3. 3. Endonuclease II - a GIY-YIG enzyme of bacteriophage T4

    Author : Pernilla Lagerbäck; Karin Carlson; Elisabeth Raleigh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GIY-YIG; EndoII; endonuclease; structure; tetramer; binding; nicking; recombination; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Endonuclease II (EndoII) of bacteriophage T4 is a GIY-YIG enzyme involved in host DNA breakdown during phage infection of E. coli. EndoII combines features of restriction endonucleases with those of homing endonucleases in that it breaks down DNA foreign to itself but recognizes a 16 bp long asymmetric and ambiguous sequence.
