11. Polycystic ovary syndrome : a study of adipocyte lipolysis in relation to endocrine and metabolic status
Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to obtain insight into possible regulatory effects of androgens on the regulation of lipolysis in subcutaneous as well as visceral adipose tissue in women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In non-obese women with PCOS, adrenergic lipolysis was investigated in both subcutaneous abdominal and visceral adipose tissue and several, novel disturbances were found. READ MORE

12. Development and application of advanced electron microscopy techniques for materials in biological systems
Abstract : Theoretically, electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy offer information on a scale beyond the optical microscope. However, the quality of the micrograph and the obtained information is limited by the sample preparation. READ MORE

13. Lipid metabolism in the pancreatic beta-cell. Implications for insulin secretion
Abstract : We have investigated the role of lipid metabolism with regard to beta-cell function and insulin secretion. Lipids are known to play a crucial functional role in the pancreatic beta-cell, where they are essential for adequate hormone release, but may also exert a long-term toxic effect, leading to beta-cell dysfunction. 14. Role of nuclear receptors in the regulation of human adipose tissue metabolism
Abstract : Nuclear receptors modulate expression of genes involved in adipose tissue (AT) metabolism. Their improved understanding may provide new treatment options for metabolic disorders such as obesity, insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). READ MORE

15. Environmental, nutritional and endocrine regulation of metabolic processes in fish
Abstract : Due to seasonal variations in temperature and food availability, fish in temperate regions should be able to make metabolic adjustments to ensure that enough energy is available for the maintenance of basal processes. The major aim of this thesis was to elucidate how the physiology and lipid metabolism of salmonid fish is affected by temperature and food availability, and to clarify aspects of the endocrine control of lipid metabolism.
