  1. 1. Studies on viral encephalitis with emphasis on herpes simplex encephalitis

    Author : Anders Hjalmarsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In this thesis studies of two types of viral CNS-infections are presented; influenza related encephalitis and herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). Influenza related encephalitis/encephalopathy has been reported to increase both in incidence and severity in the Japanese population the last decade. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on host-related pathogenesis of herpes simplex type-1 encephalitis in rat

    Author : Biborka Bereczky-Veress; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In order to explore the molecular mechanisms of Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), a severe infection of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by Herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1); a rat model resembling the human condition was characterized in the DA (Dark Agouti) strain. After injection into the whiskers’ area HSV-1 entered the CNS at the level of the brain stem via the trigeminal ganglion, subsequently spreading to the thalamus, cortex and olfactory bulb, leading to death at five days post infection (dpi). 3. 3. Aciclovir-induced neuropsychiatric symptoms : a clinical pharmacology study

    Author : Anders Helldén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Aciclovir (ACV) and its prodrug valacyclovir (VACV) are used to treat infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV), and as prophylaxis against cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in immunocompromised patients. Treatment with ACV has decreased the mortality in herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) from about 70 % to less than 30 %, and has also reduced the morbidity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Herpesvirus Infection and Immunity in Neurocognitive Disorders

    Author : Gabriel Westman; Britt-Marie Eriksson; Martin Ingelsson; Olle Korsgren; Jan Ernerudh; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Herpesviruses have co-speciated with several vertebrate and invertebrate animals throughout the history of evolution. In the immunocompetent human host, primary infection is usually benign, whereafter the virus is brought into life-long latency. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic regulation of neuroinflammation after infection and injury

    Author : Nada Omar Abdelmagid; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neuroinflammation is a common theme in a spectrum of central nervous system (CNS) diseases resulting in neuronal damage and degeneration. The exact mechanisms regulating inflammation in the CNS or its consequences in terms of nerve injury are still not known in detail. READ MORE
