  1. 21. Influence of neuromodulators and mechanical loading on pathological cell and tissue characteristics in tendinosis

    Author : Gloria Fong; Patrik Danielson; Alex Scott; Ludvig Backman; Paul Ackermann; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; substance P; acetylcholine; transforming growth factor; neuromodulators; mechanical loading; tendinosis; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Background: Tendinosis is a painful chronic, degenerative condition characterized by objective changes in the tissue structure of a tendon. Hallmark features in tendinosis tendons include increased number of cells (hypercellularity), extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and disorganized collagen. READ MORE

  2. 22. Characterizing the pancreatic "isletome" : 3D optical imaging to study diabetes

    Author : Max Hahn; Ulf Ahlgren; András Gorzsás; Leif Carlsson; Alvin C. Powers; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 3D imaging; fluorescence microscopy; 3D image analysis; technique development; diabetes; Islet of Langerhans; Insulin; β-cell mass; pancreas; anatomy; molecular medicine medical sciences ; molekylär medicin medicinska vetenskaper ; medicinsk biokemi; Medical Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The pancreas is a specialised multipurpose organ, that can be separated into two major compartments: endocrine and exocrine. The exocrine part makes up the majority of the organ volume and functions to secrete digestive enzymes into the small intestine. READ MORE

  3. 23. Extraocular Muscles in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

    Author : Anton Tjust; Fatima Pedrosa Domellöf; Mona Lindström; Thomas Brännström; Eva Hedlund; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; EOM; Satellite cells; innervation; neuromuscular disease; neurodegenerative disease; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease of motor neurons characterized by muscle paralysis and death within 3-5 years of onset. However, due to unknown mechanisms, the extraocular muscles (EOMs) remain remarkably unaffected. READ MORE

  4. 24. The language learning infant: Effects of speech input, vocal output, and feedback

    Author : Lisa Gustavsson; Francisco Lacerda; Roger Moore; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; human; language; language acquisition; perception; production; humanoid; development; model; embodied system; speech signal processing; vocal tract morphology; acoustic; speech input; information processing; scaling; interaction; growth; infant; imitation; feedback; perceptual salience; modeling; Phonetics; Fonetik; Phonetics; fonetik;

    Abstract : This thesis studies the characteristics of the acoustic signal in speech, especially in speech directed to infants and in infant vocal development, to gain insight on essential aspects of speech processing, speech production and communicative interaction in early language acquisition. Three sets of experimental studies are presented in this thesis. READ MORE

  5. 25. The Role of Impaired Interatrial Conduction in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

    Author : Pyotr Platonov; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; electrophysiology; Cardiovascular system; anatomy; interatrial conduction; lone atrial fibrillation; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of interatrial conduction defects in the genesis of lone paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) using combined approach of non-invasive signal-averaged P-wave ECG, invasive electrophysiological (EP) studies, anatomical studies and animal experiments. Non-filtered signal-averaged P-wave ECG revealed irregularities in orthogonal P-wave morphology and the presence of double-peaked configurations of P-wave spatial magnitude in patients with lone paroxysmal AF compared with healthy individuals (I), suggesting the presence of interatrial conduction delays localised in the posterior-inferior interatrial route.
