    Abstract : This dissertation builds on the current anthropological studies of care relations in practice. It draws inspiration from science and technology studies (STS) and postfeminist technoscience. A qualitative ethnographic approach grounds the empirical data collection and analysis. READ MORE

  2. 7. Agency and Artefacts : A cognitive semiotic exploration of design

    Author : Juan Mendoza-Collazos; Kognitiv semiotik; []

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the role of artefacts in relation to human agency and design within a cognitive semiotics framework. It deals with questions such as What is agency? What are artefacts and how does agency relate to them? What kind of intentions are involved in the activity of designing? What is human-specific with respect to agency and design? How can the origins and evolution of design be explained? Addressing these questions, the thesis proposes a layered model of agency for explaining the relations between different grades of agentive complexity. READ MORE

  3. 8. Making travel sustainable with ICT? : The social practice of travel planning and travel information use in everyday life

    Author : Åsa Nyblom; Mattias Höjer; Greger Henriksson; Marie Thynell; KTH; []

    Abstract : Adopting the perspective of the traveller, this thesis examines how travel plans are actually made in the everyday situation and how information is used and drawn on when planning the many, often unremarkable, trips of ordinary urban life. Ethnographical field studies in southern Stockholm, Sweden, employing a practice theory perspective showed that people use a vast mixture of different types of information when planning and making trips. 4. 9. Relational Textiles for Space Design: design methods and expressions

    Author : Delia Dumitrescu; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; knitted structures; architectural design; interactive textiles;

    Abstract : The emergence of the Smart Textiles field opens possibilities for designersto combine traditional surface fabrication techniques with advancedtechnology in the design process. When it comes to the field of SmartTextiles as interactive materials for space design, it is essential to understandthe identity of the material through design and also to understand the novelexpressions being mediated for space. Abstract : Our use of natural resources has grown dramatically in recent years, with negative consequences for both the environment and human health. At home, resource use in the form of energy, water, food, and material objects may be related to a wide range of everyday practices as well as changes to, and adaptations of, our home environments.
