    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the chemical and isotopic features of groundwater residing in the upper 1.2 km of sparsely fractured crystalline bedrock of the Baltic Shield. READ MORE

  2. 2. Properties of humic substances from groundwater and surface waters

    Author : Catharina Pettersson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : Humic substances play an important role in the environment. The aim of this thesis is to enhance the understanding of the behaviour of humic substances in natural waters and their importance for mobilizatiou/immobilization, redistribution, bioavailability and removal of metals and organic pollutants from aqueous systems. 3. 3. Viral Loop Dynamics in Temperate and Polar Freshwaters

    Author : Christin Säwström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; akvatisk ekologi; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; temperate; polar; freshwaters; nutrient limitation; bacterial mortality; lysogeny; dissolved organic carbon; humic; Arctic; Antarctic; Bacteria; Virus; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : All cellular organisms in aquatic environments are susceptible to virus attack. Viruses are the smallest but most abundant biological entities in freshwaters. This thesis describes interactions between viruses and bacteria in temperate and polar freshwaters with particular emphasis on Arctic and Antarctic aquatic systems. READ MORE

  4. 4. On diffusion of organic colloids in compacted bentonite

    Author : Susanna Wold; KTH; []
    Keywords : Diffusion; sorption; Humic Substances; Bentonite;

    Abstract : The main issue of this thesis was to obtain information ondiffusion and sorption behaviour on organic colloids incompacted bentonite through experimental studies. It was tostudy if bentonite is an efficient barrier for organic colloidsor not. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evaluation of Biomarker Responses in Fish : with Special Emphasis on Gill EROD Activity

    Author : Carin Andersson; Jan Örberg; Björn Brunström; Lars Förlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; three-spined stickleback; biomarker; EROD; ethynylestradiol; gill; vitellogenin; spiggin; CYP1A inducers; humic substances; sperm quality; biomonitoring; Biologi;

    Abstract : Many chemicals present in the aquatic environment can interfere with physiological functions in fish. Exposure to chemicals can be revealed by the use of biomarkers. Induction of 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity is a commonly used biomarker for exposure to CYP1A inducers such as dioxins and polyaromatic hyrdrocarbons. READ MORE
