21. Production, purification and characterization of antibacterial biomolecules from an alkaliphilic Bacillus
Abstract : Forty alkaliphiles, which were isolated from samples collected in Eastern Africa, have been screened for production of antibacterial compounds. One of these isolates, Bacillus halodurans B20, was able to produce a prominent amount of antibacterial activity against a Gram-positive bacteria on agar plates [paper I] and selected for further study. 22. The xanthophyll cycle, its enzymes, pigments and regulation
Abstract : The xanthophyll cycle involves the light-dependent and reversible conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin has been implicated in the protection of the photosynthetic machinery from over-excitation. The enzyme violaxanthin de-epoxidase catalyses the conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. 23. Nucleic Acids: Innovative Methods for Recovery, Clarification and Purification
Abstract : The importance of nucleic acids in pure form for preparative and analytical perspectives, have increased constantly, demanding the development of new and more efficient methods for their recovery and isolation. This thesis describes a series of different innovative methods for recovery and purification of these biomolecules. READ MORE

24. Apoptosis Regulation via the Mitochondrial Pathway : Membrane Response upon Apoptotic Stimuli
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was the investigation of the mitochondrial response mechanisms upon apoptotic stimuli. The specific objectives were the biophysical characterization of membrane dynamics and the specific roles of lipids in the context of apoptotic regulation occurring at the mitochondrion and its complex membrane systems. 25. Analysis of noncovalent and covalent protein-ligand complexes by electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry
Abstract : In this thesis, the application of electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) to the analysis of intact proteins is demonstrated. In papers I and II, the use of ESI-MS for the analysis of noncovalent protein-ligand complexes were discussed. READ MORE
