  1. 11. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy

    Author : Ekaterina Shevtsova; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chalcidoidea; parasitic wasps; structural colors; visual signaling; cryptic species; sexual dimorphism; wing membrane thickness; wing micro-morphology; wing cuticle ultrastructure;

    Abstract : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 2. 12. The effect of temperature on trophic interactions : Implications for the population dynamics of a forest pest insect in a warmer climate

    Author : Ida Kollberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Increase in temperature related to climate change will have consequences on the performance of organisms. Insects could be expected to respond more than other organism groups because they are ectotherms. READ MORE

  3. 13. Gall induction in gall wasps (Cynipidae s. lat.) : Insights from comparative genomics

    Author : Erik Gobbo; Fredrik Ronquist; Scott Egan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gall induction; comparative genomics; evolution; selection analysis; microbiome; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Abstract : Cynipidae are a family of wasps (Hymenoptera), whose larval stages develop inside plant galls, that is, abnormal plant structures formed in response to the presence of foreign organisms. Most cynipids are gall inducers and are often capable of notable levels of host manipulation. READ MORE

  4. 14. Mast cell activation disorders : a liaison between anaphylaxis and mastocytosis

    Author : Theo Gülen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The term mast cell activation disorders (MCAD) comprises a broad spectrum of heterogeneous conditions, such as mastocytosis, characterized by inappropriate mast cell activation/accumulation. The patients present with protean clinical manifestations and severity grade of symptoms may vary from case-to-case. READ MORE

  5. 15. Indirect effects of moose on the birds and the bees

    Author : Karen Marie Mathisen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Large herbivores are important drivers of ecosystem processes, affecting plant species richness and composition, primary productivity, habitat structure as well as nutrient cycling. Large herbivore activities may therefore have important indirect effects on other plants and animals in the same ecosystem. READ MORE
