1. On the Relative Order of Adverbs in the I-domain: A study of English and Swedish
Abstract : This dissertation is a theoretical and empirical investigation of the ordering of adverbs in the I-domain. Within the generative-minimalist framework, adverbs have traditionally been analysed as adjuncts, adjoined to the syntactic structure in semantically appropriate positions (e.g. Jackendoff 1972). 2. Muscle cell integrins in vitro and in vivo : Identification and characterisation of a novel integrin, α11β1
Abstract : Integrins are heterodimeric receptors composed of non-covalently associated αand β subunits which have distinct functions on different cell types. α7β1integrin is an important laminin receptor in skeletal muscle. The mRNA andprotein expression patterns of α7A and α7B splice variants during mousedevelopment were studied. READ MORE

3. Role of GPIbαlpha Clustering and N-linked Carbohydrates in the Clearance of Refrigerated Platelets
Abstract : The thesis focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which: 1) the macrophage alphaM-subunit recognizes betaN-acetylglucosamine (betaGlcNAc) residues on the von Willebrand factor receptor complex ((GPIbalpha,beta/IX)2V or vWfR) on refrigerated platelets and 2) refrigeration changes vWfR to elicit recognition through alphaMbeta2. Until recently, the only well-established mechanisms affecting platelet survival were antibody-mediated platelet clearance, consumption of platelets by coagulation reactions, and loss due to massive bleeding. 4. Non-enveloped virus infection probed with host cellular molecules : a structural study
Abstract : Early steps in virus replication require binding of the virus to its target cell, entry into the cell, and delivery of the viral genome into the cell in order to gain access to the cellular macromolecular synthesis machinery. This infectious process can only be initiated if the virus successfully attaches to a specific receptor on the plasma membrane of the target cell. READ MORE

5. Cellular Interactions with Extracellular Matrix During Development and in Muscle Disease
Abstract : The formation and maintenance of tissues in multicellular animals are crucially dependent on cellular interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM). Two different studies on such interactions are presented herein. READ MORE
