1. Beta cell function in autoimmune diabetes in young adults
Abstract : This thesis presents the results from a study of the first four years of diabetes in 879 patients aged 15-34 years at diagnosis. The aims of this study were to compare clinical classification with the presence of autoantibodies, to study the natural course of beta cell function during the first years of disease and to define predictive factors for the remaining beta cell function after diagnosis. 2. Antigen-specific islet antibodies: prediction of beta cell failure and differentiation between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
Abstract : Autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA), protein tyrosine-phosphatase-like protein (IAÐ2A), and/or pancreatic islet cells (ICA) are autoimmune markers usually present at diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is therefore in general believed to be caused by an immune-mediated beta cell destruction. READ MORE

3. The Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS): Ascertainment, risk factors, and problems with classification
Abstract : The Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS) registers diabetes in young adults aged 15-34 years in Sweden. This thesis aims to validate the ascertainment, methods in the classification of diabetes, and putative etiological factors such as family background, psychological stress, and BMI, that may affect the incidence of diabetes in young adults, in the DISS registry. 4. Epidemiology of diabetes in a well defined population in Sweden: the Skaraborg Diabetes Registry
Abstract : Time trends in prevalence, incidence and mortality was followed in 15000 diabetic patients in 1991?2005. Clinical findings, C-peptide protocols, and islet antibodies were compared in their ability to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes, and factors associated with the prognosis of diabetes were explored. 5. Aerosols of Isocyanates, Amines and Anhydrides : Sampling and Analysis
Abstract : This thesis presents methods for air sampling and determination of isocyanates, amines, aminoisocyanates and anhydrides. These organic compounds are generated during thermal degradation of polymers such as polyurethane (PUR) or epoxy.Isocyanates, amines and anhydrides are airway irritants known to cause occupational asthma.
