1. The Importance of Cell-Mediated Immunity for the Development of Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract : Background Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune disease characterised by infiltration of T-lymphocytes in the islets of Langerhans. In particular, activated Th1-like lymphocytes secreting IFN-γ are suggested to contribute to the inflammatory process and the destruction of ß-cells, whereas Th2-like cells producing IL-4 might even be protective. 2. Innate and adaptive immunity in genital HSV-2 infection: Implications for vaccine development
Abstract : Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a sexually transmitted pathogen that infects the genital tract mucosa and is the most common case of genital ulcers in humans. Despite numerous studies, little is known about the mechanisms involved in immune protection and no anti-herpes vaccine has been developed to date. READ MORE

3. The B lymphocyte in Staphylococcus aureus arthritis
Abstract : Joint infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus leads to heavy synovitis and rapid destruction of bone and cartilage. Permanent loss of joint function is seen in 20-50% of the patients, despite early eradication of the bacteria with antibiotics. READ MORE

4. Islet xenotransplantation : An immunological study in the pig-to-mouse model
Abstract : Successful clinical xenotransplantation, i.e., transplantation between species, would eliminate the shortage of donor organs. In order to study the acute cellular rejection reaction following discordant xenogeneic transplantation, an experimental pig-to- mouse islet xenotransplantation model was established. READ MORE

5. The Myc network of growth regulators and its interplay with growth and differentiation signals
Abstract : The proto-oncogenes/tumor suppressor genes of the Myc/N4ax/Mad network encode transcription factors that are important regulators of cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis and that are frequently implicated in tumor development. Regulation of their biological functions by growth/differentiation signals as well as their interplay with growth/differentiation signalling pathways play important roles in cell fate determination.
