  1. 21. Mechanisms determining efficacy of tyrosine kinase-targeting anti-cancer drugs

    Author : Maja Bradic Lindh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The expanding field of cancer research and the introduction of multiple molecular biology techniques have significantly improved cancer drug discovery, presented new drugs, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and thereby gave new hope to the cancer patients and their oncologists. Using this knowledge it is now becoming increasingly possible to determine outcome of malignant disease more accurately, to estimate response to specific therapies and to get closer to the ideal of personalized targeted therapy adjusted to each patient, and to the specific cancer type and its unique genetic profile. 2. 22. Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy : new insights into the disease mechanism and prospects for pharmacological therapy

    Author : Laura C Bott; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Expansion of a polyglutamine-encoding trinucleotide CAG repeat in the androgen receptor (AR) gene causes spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA, or Kennedy’s disease). SBMA is an adult-onset disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy due to the degeneration of lower motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord. READ MORE

  3. 23. Growth hormone in the brain : Focus on cognitive function

    Author : Erika Brolin; Fred Nyberg; Mathias Hallberg; Alfhild Grönbladh; Jörgen Isgaard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone; central nervous system; cognition; morphine; gamma-hydroxybutyrate; diabetes; Barnes maze; Morris water maze; mice; rats; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Cognitive impairments are an increasing health problem worldwide. In the developed countries, the average life expectancy has dramatically increased over the last decades, and with an elderly population more cases of cognitive impairments appear. READ MORE

  4. 24. SUMO and ubiquitin : the yin and yang of IGF-1R function

    Author : Bita Sehat; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Tumorigenesis is a multistep process involving genetic and epigenetic alterations that drive the progressive transformation of normal human cells into highly malignant derivatives. The insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) plays pivotal roles in cancer. READ MORE

  5. 25. Growth Hormone and Anabolic Androgenic Steroids : Effects on Neurochemistry and Cognition

    Author : Alfhild Grönbladh; Mathias Hallberg; Jörgen Isgaard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone; anabolic androgenic steroids; nandrolone decanoate; insulin-like growth factor; GABAB; opioids; memory; water maze; autoradiography; central nervous system; rats; Biological Research on Drug Dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning;

    Abstract : Growth hormone (GH) stimulates growth and metabolism but also displays profound effects on the central nervous system (CNS). GH affects neurogenesis and neuroprotection, and has been shown to counteract drug-induced apoptosis in the brain. READ MORE
