  1. 1. Genetic and non-genetic influences on some metabolic cardiovascular risk factors : quantitative genetic analyses

    Author : Yuling Hong; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cardiovascular risk factors; heritability; twins; adoption; insulin resistance syndrome; IGF-I; IGFBP-I; PAI-l; blood pressure; triglycerides; Lp a ; obesity.;

    Abstract : Structural-equation modeling analyses were applied to data from 302 Swedish twin pairs in order to assess the relative importance of genetic and nongenetic influences on several metabolic cardiovascular risk factors. These middle-aged and elderly twins include monozygotic and dizygotic twins reared apart and together, who came from a population-based national twin register. READ MORE

  2. 2. Osteoporosis, balance and nutrition in elderly women in primary care

    Author : Hans Lundin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Objective: Some people get skeletal fractures as a result of a trauma which wouldn’t cause a fracture in a healthy individual. These fractures are sometimes referred to as “fragility fractures”. Common sites for fragility fractures are the spine, hip, upper arm, shoulder, distal forearm and pelvis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Nutritional status before and during pregnancy in relation to the maternal insulin-like growth factor-system and health related variables in the offspring

    Author : Hanna Olausson; Agneta Holmäng; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Adequate fetal growth is of importance for health in adulthood. Maternal nutritional status has been suggested to be one major factor influencing fetal development. READ MORE

  4. 4. Insulin and IGF-I in type 1 diabetes

    Author : Christina Hedman; Claes-Göran Östenson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Type I diabetes; IGF-I; IGF system; insulin; insulin analogues; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Patients with type I diabetes have alterations in the GH/IGF system with reduced levels of circulating IGF-I, as well as other disturbances in the components of the IGF system.Alterations of both local and circulating IGF-I and its binding proteins (IGFBPs) have been associated with metabolic and vascular manifestations of diabetes and also with atherosclerosis. 5. 5. Insulin-like growth factor-I deficiency, insulin sensitivity, and glucose metabolism

    Author : Klas Ekström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In children and adolescents, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) act in concert to stimulate linear growth; however, the effects on glucose metabolism are in opposition. GH increases insulin resistance by lipolysis. READ MORE
