  1. 16. Alcohol and the effect on some appetite-regulating hormones in man

    Author : Jan Calissendorff; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Leptin; ghrelin; octanoylated; PYY3-36; GLP-1; obestatin; alcohol; NPY; IGF-1; IGFBP-1; insulin; glucose; testosterone; cortisol; catecholamines;

    Abstract : Beverage containing alcohol has been used for centuries to stimulate appetite. Ingestion of a moderate amount of alcohol increase energy intake. Regulation of food intake is complex. Several factors cooperate such as neural impulses from sensory organs; sight, smell, gut distension, social setting, memory, current energy status and hormones. READ MORE

  2. 17. Proteolysis of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-1, -2 and -4 : function of fragments

    Author : Katrin Brandt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Insulin-like growth factor;

    Abstract : The insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) stimulate cell growth, survival and differentiation, and have insulin-like activity. A family of six IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP-1 through -6) bind to IGFs with high affinity and modulate their activity in the circulation and locally at cell-surface receptors. READ MORE

  3. 18. Genetic and non-genetic influences on some metabolic cardiovascular risk factors : quantitative genetic analyses

    Author : Yuling Hong; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cardiovascular risk factors; heritability; twins; adoption; insulin resistance syndrome; IGF-I; IGFBP-I; PAI-l; blood pressure; triglycerides; Lp a ; obesity.;

    Abstract : Structural-equation modeling analyses were applied to data from 302 Swedish twin pairs in order to assess the relative importance of genetic and nongenetic influences on several metabolic cardiovascular risk factors. These middle-aged and elderly twins include monozygotic and dizygotic twins reared apart and together, who came from a population-based national twin register. READ MORE

  4. 19. Effects of mifepristone on the human endometrium and the fallopian tube during the luteal phase

    Author : Xiaoxi Sun; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mifepristone; endometrial receptivity; emergency contraception; PR-B; eNOS; IGFBP-1; PRL; HB-EGF; HB-EGF receptors HER1 and HER4;

    Abstract : Mifepristone given postovulatory has been shown effective for contraception, but the precise mechanism of action is still poorly understood. A better understanding of the mechanisms of action of mifepristone, when used for contraception, is important for further development and optimizing the regimen of use. READ MORE

  5. 20. Insulin treatment of elderly type 2 diabetic patients

    Author : Jonas Tovi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type 2 diabetes; elderly; insulin treatment; costs; ambulatory blood pressure; monitoring; well-being; symptoms; polyneuropathy; IGFBP-1 IGF-I; retinopathy;

    Abstract : In this study, the effect of improved metabolic control through insulin treatment was investigated in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes with secondary failure of oral treatment. Forty, consecutive, elderly patients (mean age 75.3 (5.9) (mean and SD), range 67-86 years) were studied. READ MORE
